I guess ill get a 4870x2 when the price drops... i was really looking forward to a new card that'd be much faster than the 4870x2

Bit of a shame. I always rely on the opposition to keep prices down and keep the market competitive. And I'm always happy to cross back to ATi if they bring out a top notch card.

ATi has one more revision of the HD4870 in a 40nm version which will hand the performance crown back to ATi then their road map is using the 40nm manufacturing tech to bring out the RV800 by Q4 this years and btw it is 40nm, ATi is already starting to roll out its 40nm cards that are hitting performance levels just underneath the HD4850 for entry level cards

Stick a full cover waterblock on the gtx295 and it will fly.

I bought my old 9800GX2 back at launch and it has never faultered me, i was going to upgrade to 4870x2 but the performance increase was negligable ( i have an ek full waterblock on my 9800gx2 that unlocks its heat issues )

Generally dual gpu cards are underclocked due to the additional heat, putting them under water is the cheapest upgrade if you already have a watercooling system as the cores can be clocked over 100Mhz on most occasions.

Nvidia need to skip to a 32nm process to move ahead properly.

Good luck with that Nvidia have only just sorted out their 55nm fabrication process.

Nvidia tend not to make a new architecture and move to a new process at the same time, they've learnt from their mistakes. So you'll have a new GPU design and architecture at an existing process and once that is stable they will move it to a smaller one.

You say ATI drivers suck, what do you base this information on to back this up?
I've seen Nvidia cause more problems for drivers than ATI and i got my info to back it up right here:
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/03...vista_drivers/
http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/27/n...crashes-in-20/
http://www.windowsvistaweblog.com/20...vista-crashes/

Basically for every 1 driver problem of ATI there is 3 more for Nvidia, im guessing the 2008 results will be out around March/April this year as these findings were produced around march 2008. Its also intresting that ATI has more driver releases than Nvidia and can still have less errors.

You won't get 100mhz on the cores for a 4870x2 unless you can up the voltage. I think you might be able to with the new rivatuner but don't quote me.

yes because Nvidia have FABS and the tens of billions of dollars it takes to create a 32nm process. TSMC wont have 32mn ready for ages. Nvidia dont need to go to 32nm they need at the very least new texture units, new ALU's that can do DB at a decent rate wouldn't be bad either.

So if you want to get one, get it fast, dont be suprised if they dissapear real quick.

id tend to agree with itsmydamnation. its a mostly paper launch, to get some good PR and so they can say "we have the faster cards"

then a couple months later they release the next gen cards anyways, typical of nvidia (theyve done this recently with the 8/9/2xx series ffs)

its been done in the past before by just about everyone

save your money, either get a 280/260/4870x2 or whatever now, or wait for the next nvidia release

Maybe yours doesn't get 100MHz more but you can't say they all wont. Both mine can do 850MHz on the core (gainward and sapphire) and I know eva2000 has 2 cards as well that do 860+. All depends on the rest of your gear, case cooling and ofcourse a bit of luck.

correction HIS HD4870x2 does 860mhz but my Gigabyte HD4870x2 stuck below 840mhz heh
