Yeah, that doesn't sound like the firmware bugs at all. Data loss wasn't a feature of either.

hey guys my harddrive recently crashed, along with my main one, which i find EXTREMELY odd, my main was a 1tb hitachi, my data was the seagate which had valuble data on it, i had a friend look at it today and he contacted seagate and they got back to him saying the driive would be picked up and then the firmware fix would be tried and if it wouldnt work they would replace the drive, i dont want that i just want my data, does anyone in bris know how to get the data back.

i have found this guy - http://www.lostdata.com.au/ and was thinking about taking it to him. everyone here seems to be talking about a special card/tool you use to update the firmware but my harddrive doesnt show up in bios or windows. when my gigabite screen comes up on boot up i pressed f12 for some kind of recovery on the main drive and it work fine and its working since, but every time i plug my seagate back in it says boot disk error. my friend seems to think i should send to seagate at NSW for them to update it with a 99% chance of recovery, does anyone on here have the tool or would offer to do the firmware update for some $$$.

i was actually turning on the hard drive to do a complete back up of everything cause i had a funny feeling about something stuffing up

i also had a 3rd hard drive in the computer and it had my old vista op on it, and that works fine and it actually booted into win vista. does anyone have suggestions as to why my hiatchi works now and my seagate wont? i just wish i found this thread a few weeks ago. ill never buy seagate again.

It's been running flawlessly in my mediaboxen for the last ~2 months then today after a restart Windows politely informs me that my disk isn't formatted!?

Ran the model and serial through the Seagate checklist, burnt the ISO, disconnected all my other drives and updated the firmware.

Very relieved to report that all data is fine and normality has returned, despite still being a little pissed off that my completely untarnished record of faultless Seagate drives over the last ~15 years now has a '1'.
i was just re-reading through this thread and saw this, if i went to the seagate site downloaded the firmware iso and just put my stuffedgate drive in and went from there would this fix the problem? would i lose my data?? or do i need a rs232 to ttl thing, altho i have NO idea what to do with it, i know a bit about computers but not that much

I have tried to fix this porblem myself using an RS232 cable and Hyper Terminal, but I don't know if my cable is faulty, or if the drive has fully died.

Does anyone know of any data recovery experts in Sydney that can help me out?

Cheers,
Dave.

Hi,

I am going to perform the BSY recovery with R232 to TTY method, so I just need to remove the PCB completely from the HDD?

Thanks Yokomo.

Personally I wouldn't. Just loosen it and slip a business card between the motor contacts and the board. Much less chance of shorting something out when you reattach it.

Oh ok, Thanks. I just watch the video with the paper trick.

Would the PCB still need external power from the 3-5V battery through to the jumper?

or we can use the power from the sata that is connected to the HDD.

The converter does need its own power source to do the TTL stuff. I have a molex plug on my converter. Don't want to risk knocking out power to the converter when I unplug/plug in the HDD.

Shitfuck ...

For the last like 1-2 years my 750GB Seagate NS drives (RAID1) have been motoring along beautifully.

Until last night when I got the characteristic "click of death".

"05" Firmware, and calling Seagate they instructed me that the firmware issue was probably what has caused it. Now all it does is spin up, then click and power down (rinse and repeat).

Chances are it'll need to go to Seagate for replacement now

Interesting though, Seagate recommended sending away both the 750GB NS drives (despite one working), as they'll replace both with matching firmware drives.

I've got a Seagate Barracudu 7200.11, ST31000333AS, but with the CC1H firmware .. had it for ages, the drive has been playing silly buggers since pretty much day 1 ... sometimes not detecting in BIOS / windows. I thought it was my old mobo sata connector playing up, still did it when I got my new mobo.

I read this thread ages ago, but never did anything about it because I didn't have space to back up my data ... last night I did a full backup of it. Hoping to flash the drive and fix the issue today...

I read on the site that CC1H f/w is NOT affected :/

So is my drive borked? or is there a flash for this model?

Thanks in advance!

After speaking with a Senior Technical Engineer from Seagate on the issue the other day, CC1H is the most up to date, and stable firmware.

I was advised to ensure any 1TB or 1.5TB drives we had, were running that firmware.

To date (according to them) no regular known issues have been observed running that firmware.

might just be a bad cable / mobo combination then :/

seems to work just dandy plugged in to the guts of a USB -> Sata Caddy. but I only turn it on when I need to use it

just annoyed that i "backed up" 500+gb of crap for no reason :/
