Default RS232 -> TTL Supplier

I've got a 6month-old dead (bricked) ST3750330AS (750Gb, Firmware SD15) here which is on the list on the Seagate website so I presume it has this problem. I'd like to try the fix using the RS232 -> TTL adaptor, but I'd like to know where you guys got yours, which supplier?

Thanks in Advance,

-Gaz.

I'm about to purchase a few harddisks ...

Are there still issues with the current batch of 7200.11s ?

I'm after the ST3320613AS , which is on the list, but that was 6 months ago ...

Hey guys,

I've got 2x 7200.11's @ 1TB ST31000340AS running SD15 firmware.

I'm actually using them on a USB docking bay and was wondering what's the best way to test/flash them? (Current computer I'm using has is IDE as I'm away from home).

My question for the test, will I be able to use the free agent programs or some aftermarket program?

You won't be able to flash them via USB, they have to be on a SATA controller to be able to flash them.

I flashed around 10 7200.11 disks and data remained intact. I would highly recommend backing up though, just incase something goes wrong.

Oh dear. I have the HD out of a 1Tb onetouch external drive unit (model ST31000333AS) that makes awful crunchy noises when trying to access data, as if there was a bit of plastic floating around in there. It will give me a directory listing, but no more. When it eventually gives up, the noises stop and it goes back to spinning quietly.

I am guessing this is a different fault to the one this thread references?

If you buy a new one, you shouldn't need to lash it now as the ones in the shops now should be new stock and not 6 months old stock. But, if you do get an affected drive, then flash away and off you go. That said, I've got a flashed drive that I did back when I first got the updated firmware from seagate. I've just come home and the drive is showing up as RAW in windows. Not happy Jan.

Different issue. From memory, the issue mainly showed symptoms of no date, a smaller drive size, not showing up at all etc. Crunchy noises is usually a more serious problem with the inner workings of the drive and should be replaced fast-ish. In your case, I hate to say, but if you can't access the files it is already too late, most likely.

Default Damn Seagate

I bought one of these doorstops back in December last year for a file server and it initially worked ok.

The model I bought was a ST3750330AS (750gb) and had the SD15 firmware in it. I didn't want to take the chance so flashed it with the supposed update and it has ran flawless until last Sunday where it just vanished from Device Manager and the drive letter just dropped.

A frantic 5 minutes later and a quick bounce confirmed by the 5 minute bios hang that the device had died, AND WITH THE UPDATED FIRMWARE TOO!!

The warranty checker on Seagate's website shows it as having warranty still until 2013 so must have been a 5 year warranty.

I really need the data off of it and I certainly wont be returning it until I can get it off due to it being the wifeys' business accounts info, so i took the plunge and ordered a 'kit' from eBay (the RS232 to TTL adapter, a serial to usb cable and a Torx6 screwdriver) and I'll attempt the fix myself.

Plenty of info how to do it on the InterWeb so I'll let everyone know how I get on. If I manage to fix it and get off the data, i will prolly ebay it off as I used to be a Seagate fanboi but this has killed off all liking of their products.

For the price you'd get from eBay (what, ~$70?), is it worth the risk of potentially having someone trying to restore that data?
