Lightbulb Blu-Ray Sales Developing Nicely Compared to DVD's..

Good to see a nice finish to 2008 and goo sales during the holiday season..

Quote:
The Blu-ray Disc player industry is seeing increased sales over the past two and a half years. Since the technology was unveiled, 10.7 million players (including Playstation 3s) have been shipped to retail stores across the US. The 2008 sales have increased three-fold compared to 2007 estimates.

According to Adams Media Research, the household penetration for Blu-ray Disc players is 8% after slightly less than three years on the market. Compare this to the three-year estimates of about 3% for Color TV, 2% for CDs and 4% for DVDs, and Blu-rays are looking to be a rapidly growing industry.

Software sales for Blu-ray Disc players are increasing as well. This past October was the first month to hit 2 million disc sales, which increased to 8 million by December. At the close of 2008, disc sales stood at 24.09 million for the year, bringing the total since launch to over 30 million sales.

Future Blu-ray Disc players are using the “BD-Live” technology which allows users to interact with the player over a broadband network. And there will be a significant addition to the 53 disc titles which already allow a digital copy to be downloaded and viewed on mobile devices.

Sales of Blu-ray Disc players are projected to increase two to three fold in the next year, according to Adams Media Research.

So what does this establish?

That people bought PS3 consoles over Xmas?

Wow, thats different...

Apparently DVD Player sales are upwards of 200 million in 2008 alone.

This establishes that people have been far more accepting of Blu-Ray quicker than other technologies.

I know my first DVD player cost over a grand, but was oh so sweet (still think it's the best DVD player I have ) I have only just joined the Blu-Ray ranks myself, mainly due to the lack of HDTV (until now). High Def really looks quite amazing.

As for PS3's... have they helped Blu-Ray along, I'd say yes. If it wasn't for the free Blu-Ray player I got with my Samsung LCD I would have bought a PS3, for the money, you get a decent player, a media centre and the ability to play games should you so choose.

If they really want Blu-ray to go mainstream, they're going to have to lower Blu-ray movie/tv show prices closer to current DVD prices. The average consumer isn't going to see a reason to buy the Blu-ray version of something when it costs $10 more (or heaps more for TV series) than the DVD version.

You know the sad thing, prices for "new" formats are always more expensive than the what they replace, in many cases because the "new" format can't be cheaper!

I'm sure each media was cheaper, but I wonder what the cost of production was for LP -> Tape -> CD -> DVD -> Blu-Ray?

Are things still getting cheaper to make? Is the consumer still being bent over? I would hazzard the answer is yes.

The problem with that comparison is that most consumers dont see the value in the extra cost for blu-ray over dvd, to make the jump worthwhile.
As such they are not going to fund the jump to a new format when it is of little to no benefit to them.

Is someone trying to suggest that monthly sales of blu-ray will continue to be around 8 million, outside the holiday/xmas sales period?

edit: or is that 8 million dollars worth of sales?

The price of players is reasonable, and the tech is great (apart from DRM!).
But the cost of titles is still offputting. Sure you can find a bargain here and there, but most titles ive seen are $30-$40.

I'm not sure how the average buyer thinks buying a Blu Ray player is justifiable, unless it is with a new TV. Most people would find a DVD player more than adequate considering you can buy an expensive DVD player atm for 200 bucks and a cheap Blu Ray for 350 and upwards.

Bluray is such an underwhelming step up from DVD, compared to the huge leap that DVD was compared to VCR.

Frankly, I'm not bothering until BR players are sub $100 and the disks are no more expensive than DVD..

You will be waiting awhile for that to happen.
The CE companies are bleeding enough atm, and it will be sometime before they can afford to give them away at that price.

When your ready to buy a Sub-$100 blu-ray player, a new format will be around the corner. Franky i tend to stay away from these priced devcies.
