OK. i think I've figured it out.
If you didn't know, gpu 1 on the 295 is connected to the 2 dvi ports. GPU 2 is connected to the hdmi port. Now vista being vista it needs a monitor or a dummy load and the desktop extended to that "monitor" in order for folding to see that gpu. OK fine. Main monitor on DVI 1 and hdmi to dvi to vga adaptor with dummy load on the hdmi port. Nada. Hmm. Switch dummy load for real live monitor on the hdmi. Hey presto! We have 2nd gpu folding. So why doesn't the dummy load work? Many googles later, it hit me: The dummy load works by providing resistance on the rgb (or analogue!) channels on a vga connector. This works on DVI because most video cards and dvi-vga adaptors pass through digital and analogue signals. However HDMI is digital only, so anything on the rgb channel is ignored. So how to trick a hdmi connector that something is connected? The answer is here: http://pinouts.ru/Video/VGA15_pinout.shtml Specifically: VGA pinout : monitor ID detection pin assignments 4 11 12 ID2 ID0 ID1 n/c n/c n/c no monitor n/c n/c GND Mono monitor which does not support 1024x768 n/c GND n/c Color monitor which does not support 1024x768 GND GND n/c Color monitor which supports 1024x768 GND means connected to ground n/c means that the pin is not connected anywhere I was shooting for option 3 GND GND n/c. I ran a 75 ohm resistor from pin 4 to pin 5 (gnd) plugged it in to test and now my hdmi connection thinks there is an old analogue vga monitor on there!!! Vista is happy. Folding is happy. Fat80y is happy. The next test will be 2 x 295 on a vista box. I'll post my findings over at stanford and see if anyone can take my findings to the next level. |

Hmmm, it would appear there is one caveat: Vista forgets you've previously extended the desktop upon a restart. I guess it's not a big deal to re extend the desktop each startup - or like me, just don't switch off your pc!!!

that's some great investigative work you've done there. I wonder how long you spent stuffing around before you realised HDMI was digital only. It seems obvious now but I certainly wouldn't have thought of it.
I hope oldsniper and flatout have some tricks up their sleeves or you'll be impossible to catch

![]() Unless some one gives me some money or I win Xlotto TEAM OLDsniper looks to be at our limit for the time being. I would love to be able to get another 9800GTX+ and put 2 into the Fbox and get a 295 for this machine. BUT it is just a dream ATM. Going recent figures, TEAM OLDsniper could be sitting in No5 spot on the most points ladder by the end of this year too. Well done too. It is appreciated.

Just thought I'd post my frustrations recently.
Have been folding on the 2 cores of the GTX295 for a while (having to turn off SLI "multi-gpu support") in Vista 32. Problem is, that if you shut down, vista will not start again properly (black screen after the loading part, prior to logon). Have to get in to safe mode, and uninstall the driver and re-install (so the SLI is turned back ON) in order to reboot. Lost nearly a week of folding because of the mucking around to be able to work out what it was. Not normally a problem (my machine is on 24/7), but frustrating as hell if I need to reboot for some other reason and forget to switch it back on first. Have been trawling forums for a while to get a solution, but most have none. I'm about to try the 182.05 beta to see what happens. If anyone else knows of a solution yet to be discussed, let me know. At the moment I have settled on 185.20, although I am not game to reboot! I have windows update flashing it's "restart required" msg for 2 days now... I think everyone is just waiting for Nvidia to pull their fingers out and release some proper drivers... |

Uh, net stop wuauserv
Ever since I started running f@h i have windows prompt to install updates rather than doing it automatically, just in case at the default time of 3am something bad happens with an update, I don't miss 12-14 hours of folding |

Although there's a typo in my original, should be "automatic updates", for an xp system at least, and "windows update" for vista. Also, at least on an XP system, telling it to prompt you to install won't help if microsoft push out a critical security update, the damn thing will install itself and auto restart anyway. EDIT: Just to be semi useful.. Here's a reghack for vista users that allows auto updates to install, but prevents a forced restart. http://www.howtogeek.com/geekers/WUNoAutoReboot.zip

No problems since then. M$ say the defender problem has been fixed. I am unconvinced. I left defender to run as installed at default. I don't think defender actually does much.
