Default Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala": Discussion thread

Yes, its actually called Karmic Koala.

Firstly, the official announcement is here.
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ub...ry/000536.html

Phoronix talks a bit about it...
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...item&px=NzA3OA

For those too lazy to click any link, the highlights (under consideration) are:

(1) Server version: Cloud computing features. Will be using API's of Amazon EC2. So you can build your own cloud!

(2) Desktop version: They may use Red Hat's Plymouth. Also aim for lower boot times than 9.04...They want to do better than 25 secs on a netbook.

If you don't know what Red Hat's Plymouth is about...

When they say this, do they mean 'DIY cloud' or integration with EC2?

Hopefully this will also be good for intranet / cloud based web applications.

Damn. I was really pining my hopes on Kinky Kookaburra...

Pity it looks like they're delaying the cosmetic makeover again. And I thought Jaunty was supposed to have the boot time revamp as well - it appears only Ext4 is helping Ubuntu in that department right now, but I suspect Windows 7 is still a little way off official release, so there might be some time left to clean things up a bit by October before the next level of competition heats up again.

Nah looks like they're considering it

Quote:
The desktop will have a designer's fingerprints all over it - we're now
beginning the serious push to a new look. Brown has served us well but
the Koala is considering other options. Come to UDS for a preview of the
whole new look.
(from https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ub...ry/000536.html)

The focus on netbooks will be good as well. If they can get all the devices supported for the common models (function keys, wireless, etc) out of the box it would be great.

There are some specific goals that we need to meet in Jaunty. One of
them is boot time. We want Ubuntu to boot as fast as possible - both in
the standard case, and especially when it is being tailored to a
specific device. The Jackalope is known for being so fast that it's
extremely hard to catch, and breeds only when lightning flashes. Let's
see if we can make booting or resuming Ubuntu blindingly quick.
oh wait

Potential copyright issues there?

Besides, do you really want MORE hints of brown?

I use Xubuntu for one good reason...Because it isn't brown.

wow i'm out of hte loop... haven't even seen 9.04 (still on 8.10 :-P) .... kinda over rebuilding my machines for cleaner upgrades tho :-P even tho dist-upgrade is seemingly reliable since 7.04 > 7.10... but unless it improves performance over 8.10 I won't be going... 8.10 brought my little P3 to a slowdown, thinkin of goin back to 8.04 or i could upgrade the hardware ... naaaa

<20 second bootup with 9.10 =o

What else can they do to improve bootup performance? I assume ext4 set as default will help things along..
