Default RAM RE: Inspiron 6400

I recently got myself a 2nd hand inspiron 6400.
its the fourth in our family - mum, dad & sis all have one too

mine happens to be a slightly updated version of it.. everyone elses has a 32bit only capable CPU, mine has a 64bit capable CPU

what are my chances *my* 6400 can take 4GB RAM? mum & dads were the first ones we got & I read somewhere they cant take 4GB but mines a lil diff so I'm intrigued

I'm gonna go out on a limb here: I'm living in Lane Cove 2066 in Sydney atm, if anyone near by has 2x2GB lappie ram I can plug in just to test if mine can take it I'd very very muchly appreciate it

I Have a Inspiron 6400 (On it right now)

i can tell you that it does support 4GB of ram, however at times mine does crash sometimes. Not because of the sticks as they are Kingstons, maybe just the laptop doesn like running 4GB of ram i dont know.

I Did have 2x Dells (Selling other one now) and they done the same thing at times (Crash)

I might be unlucky, but others may have the same problem also!

Unless there is a recent Bios update (Ill check now) maybe it might fix it!

Same here Dell will tell you the Inspiron 6400 only goes to a maximum of 2gb ram. I have sucessfully upgraded mine to 4gb (2 x 2gb) and it has run perfectly fine without a problem.

I used Kingston 2gb 667mb ddr2 brand memory chips. Cost me $40 each.

Not to highjack the thread too much, has anyone been running 4GB on an older 6400? I believe the 6400 in question is using a C2D T2050 (1.6Ghz if that corresponds).

Yep my bad... I haven't owned a PC since a P4 2.8 desktop some time ago and haven't kept up with tech since, apologies.

ok, my turn to hijack the thread now... I've got a 3yr old inspiron 6000, with 2x512mb DIMMS & pentium M 1.7ghz.

Its running XP and is used for internet, itunes, movies and MS word/excel every now & then.

Should I bother getting 2 x 1gb ram modules? Or should I just stick it all on number 22 at the casino instead?
