100mbit here, bring it on.

its the future, we are going back to terminals again.....good thing is, cloud computing like this will let us run the latest stuff, without upgrading everytime, but also saves on power (think big, not 1 pc = 1 user)

im looking forward to setting up an amazon ec2 account, then I can just pay for whatever cpu usage I need for my renders (very cheaply too)

home pc's dont really need to get faster, and people just want smaller and more portable (hence laptops selling much more than desktops now)...wanna play crysis on your netbook?

bring it on

Edit: http://aws.amazon.com/what-is-aws/ have a read

Isn't this or something close to what Gizmondo tried and ultimately failed to do?

20MB here...................

BUT this is not going to work for aussies at all I'm sorry to say.

It doesn't matter how good this product is cos we simply won't have the bandwidth quota to handle 720P streaming.

I don't know how accurate this example might be but on apple.com/trailers - 720P trailers frequently are over 100MB worth of data for a minute and a bit.

Of course not but wh would they care about aussies we wouldn't make them any money. Stick a server in New York and Tokyo and watch the dollar dollar bills roll in, if they can market it well and it actually works.

yeah buit the dickheads @ APple trailers dont know how to encode. THey also get the studios to encode for them n Apple just hosts the trailers...

... ALSO... Apple uses one of the WORST encoders! They dont even compress all the data (mostly audio) when doing the trailer. Thats y when other studios do the encodes (like WB), u will find their filesizes a 1/4 smaller

As for gaming, I see this as for the casual gamer. Thought this technology was about 10-15 years away. Movie streaming on demand @ home is still not 100%. As all u have pointed out, Australia telecommunication totally SUCKS ARSE!!!!!

But........ im so not getting a console anymore!! Sitting to my Wii for the gimmick!

erm, if you ping your isp its about 16-25ms. so to send our keyboard input/mouse movement takes say 16ms at best, 25ms at worst
it therefore takes at best 32ms and 50ms at worst to get a response back to you based on your input, if the game runs at 60fps it will take a further 16ms on thier end to generate a frame from your input, thats 48ms to 100ms all up, which is way to much for action games, especially first person shooters.

considering i wont even join a multiplayer game if it pings above 80ms :P

they run their own local servers - so there wouldn't be any multiplayer lag at all - if there's any lag involved anywhere it would be streaming the video back to the players.

I like the concept, but it'll be many years before it becomes commercial / practical to an internet backwater like us - there'd be too much lag (unless they had local aus streaming game servers).

just need higher data limits, it is definitely all about quota.

i can stream those 720p trailers with ease on just a TPG ADSL2+ connection.

What if something screws up on their end for extended periods of time? You can't play.

How will they deal with ALL those connections at once?

No hard copy anymore?

Can you mod games?

Will they always upgrade their stuff straight away?

Obvious lag issues. Everyone has them over the net every now and then with any connection, a game that could have been played locally can now stuff up at any time depending on one of the many things that can happen on their end.

Sounds ok for consoles, leave PC's alone. Once tards can play PC games on their TV's, I wouldn't expect PC games to be challenging anymore.

what does it matter what screen people want to play on?

do you care if your playing someone on a 17" crt, vs that of a 30" lcd?

Interesting idea, but I query whether the infrastructure would be there for it to be liable. But let's wait and see!

At the moment there are beta sign-ups on their website, its only for US residents which is no surprise considering it will be probably aimed for their market considering the download caps or lack of caps they have.

http://www.onlive.com/beta_program.html

I haven't bother to try and put fake US details, but if someone is keen post up your results.
