I've been in the market for a 4/5 drive NAS for a while now. Most seem to be around $700-$1200 without drives, too expensive for me.

I came across an "Acer Aspire easyStore" today. List price is "from $1299" but staticice is showing the no-drive version from $260.

Why so cheap (comparatively)? It seems to tick the right boxes - RAID5, Gigabit, 4x drive bays, 3 year warranty.

    Thoughts?

Hmm, it does seem to be plastered across many different vendors.

I to would like to know what the catch if there is any is.

From what i can gather, it looks like its a clearance model.. as it debuted in 2007... and it looks like new models are on the way..

    still $260... i'm really tempted..

ive already got a CFI 4-bay raid enclousure
its also supports RAID 10 and uses eSATA instead of Gbe LAN.

however mine cost me $363 at the time.

this is looking tempting as a means of expanding my storage capacity :)

Hrmm, typically us Mehicans get screwed with prices down here, so is it worth getting for $300? How do these compare to Thecus or Netgear?

I think it you use it as a basic 4x sata nas box, with a Gbit interface, then you can't really go wrong.. if you start to compare it to a thecus then you will be disappointed..but as a basic nas box.. i think it'll be more than sufficient..

think i'll get one.. and ditch my 4 external 500gb drives..

I just need one for storage, a lot of reviews have said that the 1 gig nic on some nas's are slow due to the cpu.

and saving the parts for a HTPC.....

Me too. I was thinking about upgrading my ReadyNAS to a pro model but for this price I can live with having 2 NAS boxes.

I've always thought these sorts of products are way over-priced for what they do. So this clearance price finally makes it worthwhile I reckon. Basically these things should not cost more than a DIY mini-pc file server!

my biggest problem is their proprietary nature and the unlikelihood of any data recovery if a drive fails.
