Question Netbooks - handling sun light glare ?

Been thinking of buying a netbook but was wondering how they fair with sun light glare for LCD screens ? Any netbooks handle it better than others ?

Guess any requirement would be long battery life

Any suggestions ?

My Eee1000H has a matte screen and doesn't suffer much at all from glare.

You could take a look at the one. Real world batter life (surfing the net via WI-FI, Word processing etc) is about 5 hours.

Good luck
Paul

I guess in sun light, like if you're on campus at uni for example in the sun on the grass, nothing you get will be okay - matte or gloss...
For a little sunlight you really need a really bright backlight. Matte screen helps, but I know my N10J with the LED backlit screen is exceptionally bright and more than useable during the daytime, and it's glossy. Last a long time like this too.
Netbooks seem to have brighter screens than the larger laptops, which is a good thing.

I've watched things outside at uni fine on my matte screen 901. Not in direct sunlight or anything, but it does quite fine on a sunny day. Side by side with a glossy N10J I can use my EEE fine while its hard to see on the N10 if anything is actually on the screen.

If you goto somwhere like officeworks where they have a good range of netbooks on display. You can see All the models that are glossy. A few like Asus or IBM Ideapad are the ones that don't use those annoying glossy screens on there netbooks. Also look at the MSI Wind range that doesn ot use the glossy screen as well.

Problem is, office works don't have the sun sitting behind them :P

Use the fluorescent lights to your advantage and see how they reflect off the screen?

Probably the closest you will be able to get to a true comparison and really no one will let you take one outside without paying.

Techno Privacy Scarf to the rescue!

I've used my (regular) laptop with matte screen outside and it's hard to see the screen, sitting in medium shade unless it's on maximum brightness. You definitely need a matte screen, I don't know who's stupid idea it was to make some glossy but for the short time I used a friends' laptop with one it was horrible even under fluorescent lighting.

I suspect you'll find most matte screens similar and finding one with a higher contrast ratio would be your best bet.

Hello George,
Long time no speak Anyway, the only way to overcome the "direct sunlight" readability problem would be to install a trasflective display.

I tested about 8 different LCD's in my Carputer setup, and the only thing that really works is transflective - 3M films will assist a little, but not much.

With that said, a transflective panel will easily cost as much as the netbook....so, if you can justify going this route, all good, otherwise it may be a bit exxie.

Keep us posted though, would be good to know what you do.

ps: I picked up a brandnew X60 IBM Tablet base, no LCD etc, so I'm considering doing a transflective panel in it, as I will be using it outside on customer sites fairly often....

What size panel you're after? Maybe I can give some pointers/links if you go for this (expensive) option....

Kind regards,
pvanr aka mrbean
