Work PC, not too bad, let down by typically poor work GPU.

there is no upgrade path from xp to w7.
you'll need to backup and do a clean install.

i went from having 7 uninstalled devices to only 2 thanks to windows updates and that includes getting a display driver for the ati mobility 9600 that it has.
this puppy now does aero!! and gets a score of 2.0

Windows Update was great with the drivers on this laptop. The only 2 drivers I had to install manually was the video drivers and the wireless drivers (since I cbf plugging in the cat5). This laptop has a mobility 9000 :-(

after doing some googling of hardware id's etc, i've found that the two drivers it couldn't install was for the card reader (WTF!? it's a card reader FFS!) and the trusted platform stuff.

other than that, it's not bad for old hardware.

I thought the whole idea of the index was that M$ was going to rate software with minimum required WEI score. Just a simple way to tell if your computer can handle the latest programs (for the hardware illiterate?). Has anyone actually seen this index referenced anywhere other than in windows itself?

Only have vista running on my main rig, but I put Win7 x86 on my lappy, haven't checked the score but it would be painfully low I imagine... Just loading it (x64) onto my HTPC as we speak (as I type?).
