Default New iPhone

Sorry if this has already been discussed or should be part of the iPhone 3G MkII discussion thread but i wasnt as it isnt about the 3G really.

I'm looking at possibly buying a new phone in the near future (currently have a 2 year old N95-1) and i have quite an interest in the iPhone. However i can find a fair few rumors on the interweb regarding the a new iPhone. I dont want to go get an iPhone only to have them release a new model a couple of days later (same thing happened to me when i got my N95 a couple of days later the 8GB was released).

Do you think there is any substance in these rumors? If so The talk suggests a cut down iPhone mini to be a second iPhone in which case the 3G will still be the best?

Thanks for any help you might be able to shed.

Based on their previous release schedule, yes we can expect one. Since Apple isn’t Nokia in regards to releasing ten's of handsets each year, a new iphone each year is not out of the question.

Hold out untill WWDC in June (8-12 I think). IMO we are most definitely going to see a new phone. Many things point to a refresh, just like how optus has announced that there will be price cuts on the current iphone, which i believe is in anticipation for the refresh along with 3.0 software.

Isn't there a firmware update for the iPhone due soon that will give it all the features people have been complaining about it lacking, such as MMS etc.. why would they do that and release a new phone too?

Possible extra features (physical) more memory and faster processor, more ram etc etc. But most importantly better battery life!

Hrm, all valid reasons to hold out a little bit.

Personally i'd but if if they just fixed the reception (not just firmware bs) and increased the battery life to something decent when in use.

Sir.Eos, I'm in the same boat, I like my sis's iphone, the interface is great but the camera is crap (I do like taking "kodak moments", no flash (atleast leds are better then nothing), no usb (have to carry the cable around) and that's just a few issues noted, kind of puts a dampener on things compared to my 2 year old N95-1. Though there is speculation that the new ipone suppose to have a 3+ megapixel camera which is a 1+.

Also the new HTC Superstar sounds good, with the Tegra chipset which suppose to output 720P video via hdmi.

While firmware can help battery life, in most cases in the past it makes a minimal difference. The problem with the current iPhone 3G is when you have 3G enabled it basically halves you battery life. Considering 3G is standard on most phones these days, such a large hit is hard to swallow, unless you want to charge it every day or twice a day if you use applications and surf the net on it.

Point is, with anything that runs of electricity there is a good chance it will be superseded very shortly after release.

My justification for signing up to the Optus $49 cap was I just finished on my previous $49 cap, didn't want to sign up to another one until I found a phone I wanted... and voila the iPhone popped up.

Sure, it's the 8gb instead of the 16gb... and it will be outdated quickly enough, but getting an iPhone on a $49 cap is still an excellent deal all things aside.

According to macrumor.com and a screen shot from one of the new leaked iphones we can expect to see this year the following updates;

- 600MHz CPU Speed (up from 400MHz)
- 256MB RAM (up from 128MB)
- Digital Compass and FM
- 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus
- 32GB size
- No major changes in battery, screen and external casing.

Ill hold onto my 3g 8gb for a little longer and when the time is right it may break and the insurance ive been paying $8 a month for should see me with the new model
