Can't wait to see how this turns out. I'd like to see this made with the Cryengine, Source engine, or Dunia engine.

I'll be looking out for this one though.

Source engine can be instantly ruled out. Given the games requirements, an engine that supports complex lights is required. Source engine is better suited to games that have fixed lighting that isn't likely to change.

Translation: the source engine is/has always been, shit.

The source engine is decrepit now. No game slated for an '09 release would want to be using it, let alone this Thi4f "announcement" which isn't so much of an announcement, and more of a confirmation its going to be made sometime in the future, on some platform they cant even forsee yet. This game is being made for next gen, not current.

Thi4f? Thief 3 could have lived with being called Thi3f, but Thi4f? Thiaf? What a stupid name.

what about left 4 dead? The dynamic lighting pretty much makes the game.

Thief 4 Developer Interview (Incgamers.com)

Nothing much is revealed though - but it does show that Thief 4 has been announced REALLY early in the piece; its just past the concept submission phase, even before pre-production!

EDIT: Eidos-Montreal GM Stephane D'Astous sets the bar pretty high for Thief 4 as per his GDC Canada comments below (source: IGN)

Quote:
After Monday's announcement, the studio threw up an official message board that quickly became peppered with comments and questions from fans of the franchise. Would Garrett return as the main character? Would voice actor Stephen Russell reprise his role? How would stealth be handled? Would it be open-world?

We asked D'Astous all of the above questions and were politely refused answers, although he did assure us that the game would stay true to its stealth roots, even while attempting to broaden the series' horizons.

"It's safe to say that there's an association of stealth games being boring and slow-paced. And we're fully aware of that. I think we'll try to repeat what the first game did, which is to really break ground on the traditional way of playing. And I think if we want to do a fully stealth game, it's going to be, I hope, very innovative and bring a lot of new things to the table," D'Astous said.

For Eidos, that seems to mean hardcore-focused games that also draw in more mainstream gamers, ones who may not have played games like Thief previously but are curious and willing to try a new series.

"We want to bring something new to the table, because these games sold respectably [in the past], but we want to bring it to another level. We want to have a larger audience without diluting the content," said D'Astous. "That is the real challenge, to bring it to a larger audience but without making it too easy or too thin on content. We're going to bring certainly a lot of innovation to both [Thief 4 and Deus Ex 3]."

Exactly what that means is open to interpretation at this stage, although D'Astous hinted that story, choice and RPG elements will play a large role in Thief 4, rather than the instant gratification that comes with twitch combat.

"People want to have a richer experience. They want to have choices in their gameplay and I think games are getting more and more sophisticated with storytelling, and I think we can certainly do something with that with Thief."

keeping a close eye on this one, as i have really enjoyed the thief series

my favorite was thief 2 ... didnt mind thief 3 but found the walking around to the next mission a bit annoying towards the end

Holy crap. Great news. Thief 1 and 2 were epic for me back in the day. They were the reason why I tend to play stealthy in every FPS I play, namely Crysis recently. Never played/got into part 3 for some reason.

I remember taking 2 hrs minimum to complete every mission. I hate watching Youtube vids of this game where guys are completing missions in under 10 minutes.

Hopefully not.

I would really like to see this done well. Judging by 'Thi4f', though... yeah... I dunno about this one

Always? Jees it must be some pretty golden revenue generating shit then?

L4D improved on the lighting greatly, you look at their blogs they did quite a large amount of research to pull off the right effect.

HOWEVER. Eidos will most likely already be creating something in-house for next-gen like you said. But given the console market it's likely they'll cash in on a PSWII60 deal. I certainly hope not
