Mate, listening to your recordings, it sounds to me like it's the fan hitting something. With my TT PSU the found was MUCH louder (very ironic for a so called "QFan" model
) but it was being caused by the Antec PSU cage 'squeezing' the thing which caused the fan to hit the grill. Interestingly, it only happened while the computer was 'cold' (around 10-15 minutes after booting-up it stopped) but it also would come and go at random times. Eventually I figured out what it was and removed the cage - it's been 100% ever since. To my ears, it sounds like you've got a lesser but similar problem. That's why I asked if you've tried removing all of the mounting screws from the PSU and just letting it 'sit' in your case. It could be that the screws have very slightly warped the box which has caused the fan to make contact. It's probably a matter of no more than a milimetre or two. Give that a go as well as doing what Stenchlord suggested and turning it upside down!

auApex, I'll give it a shot tomorrow. I don't think it is the fan... for instance, when scrolling, the fan isn't going to be increasing and decreasing RPMs that quick (I assume). I did take out the filter from underneath it, but I'll release the screws and lift it a tad tomorrow as there is a sort of rubber/neoprene padding underneath. |

I had to RMA the same PSU after 3 weeks of use because of a ticking fan.Your recording didnt give away much to me.Have you tried phisically stopping the fan.

Hook it up to another system. Same result?

I think from the bulk of the posts, the first step should be for you to try to rule out the fan as the source of the problem.
Does anyone know - is it physically dangerous (e.g. risk of electric shock) to stick something between the fan grills to stop the fan while the PSU is running? If it isn't, I don't think it will hurt the PSU to stop the fan for a minute or so while it's running. You probably already know this but make sure you have obstructed the fan from spinning before you switch on the PSU as you might break it by sticking something in to stop it while it's running (learnt that the hard way with a case fan)!

but if you insist, stick something very plastic and non conductive in there, and tape it in position, dont hold it in position.... if it were me, and i really needed to do this, i would pull the case apart, unplug the fan, (just uses a standard 3 pin fan connector), then put the case back on and run it again but dont do anything load intensive or run it for a prolonged period without the fan, or even better, replace the fan and dont run it fanless at all |
