Not really, some cards like the XFX XXX and black editions will have their own 'special' tweaking software, but personally same shit all around. That extra $200 bucks i would put towards a nice waterblock if i was already using a watercooling setup in my system.

Don't know about that; the EK block doesn't seem to work right on my Sapphire 5970, causes the card to become flakey over time and artifact in 2D desktop and then lock up in 3D mode where as the stock cooler works fine.

Over the interweb people are reporting that different brands of cards have different sized components when compared to other manafactures models when the stock cooler is removed, hence why a "one" waterblock won't work on "all" cards.....it's a lucky dip as I have already found out.

im looking to upgrade my 2 4850's to something newer, and I was looking at the 5770's, grabbing 2 of those. How much more of a general increase am I looking at if I grab 2 5770's? I'm gravitating towards the 5770 because it is fairly cheap, and I don't think I would use a 5970 to its full use.

No benchmarks to prove my thoughts, but I do think that 1x HD5850 will be a much better purchase than two HD5770s. A 5850 is a fair bit faster than the 5770 and be a better upgrade than simply upgrading to the 5770s from the 4850s.

What do you mean different sized components?

I thought they all come from the same factory? Are some brands using cheaper components?

Talking raw performance only based on the Anandtech review below...

2 x 5770 in CF is about a 5870 - maybe a little better...

2 x 5770 in CF is possibly cheaper and easier to get hold of...

This review might help.

+1 to using 2x 5770 in a crossfire setup. Probably cheaper and easier to source than 1x 5850. And the performance would be better.

Damm, I'm really regretting getting a 750i motherboard right now. No CF for me I take it 5850s are going to be ~$400 for the foreseeable future?

round about, I dont think they will drop in price much very soon, given the limited supply, and that nvidia is taking their sweet time in releasing their new stuff. But it will get there

Exactly what I mean, different brand cards seem to have some difference in some of the components used therefore meaning a water block designed for a reference board may indeed not work with all boards if some of the components on the boards vary by .5mm in height....this may be due to a sourcing issue with availability of specific brand components...who knows?

You should of got a nice P45 board anyhow MSY had 5850 for $377 for a limited time so I'm sure the next batch will be similar.
