Why does it matter wether its a single GPU card or double, differentiating the two based on that is arbitrary, the only differentiating should be done on price. And considering a 4870x2 will be cheaper than the 5870 with only 16% performance increase i'm a bit underwhelmed.

At least these results are more realistic then what we had before

5870 is roughly on par with the GTX295 in Crysis... definitely not the nearly 2x performance in the initial benchmarks

By those slides the 5870 is alot faster then the 295GTX in the majority of those games, looks quite legit, tho overall system specs and details are not listed.

THIS is what i was referring to before Mau1wurf1977, cbf digging up the image showing 2x Crysis performance.

One thing that looks annoying is drivers. The cards have large differences between titles which is unfortunate and annoying, it clearly has the hardware to thrash games but games being designed for one set of drivers is such a setback

people need to remember you are comparing a single gpu card the 5870 to the gtx 295 and the 4870x2 both of which are duel gpu cards. The 5870 is beating both these duel gpu cards so thats pretty impressive. imagaine
1 5870x2 probably be faster than quad gtx 295 sli and faster than 2 4870x2 in cf,, i would like to in action 2 5870x2 in cf that would be pretty damn fast if the drivers are good

EDIT:

My first conclusions

All the massive red bars are done with 8xAA.

So these 8xAA results help raise the average over the GTX285.

So be careful when looking at this charts :-)

If we leave the 8xAA scores out, then the HD5870 has roughly a 20-40% lead over the GTX285...

So thats the more realistic figure to go from here...

Exactly - it's like we lose perspective because the dual chip cards exist.

As I recall, it's been pretty normal right since the start of the SLI, then crossfire, days that a new card traded blows with two of the previous generation card when it came out.

But you always wanted the single card because it didn't have the inconsistency of the dual card setup, and over time the drivers make it pull away.

We've been spoilt with the single PCB dual GPU cards - don't let these take away from the fact these cards are pretty epic. Just because the GTX280 wasn't faster than the 9800GX2 when it came out didn't mean that it wasn't a very impressive card (albeit way too expensive).

How do you figure this? The 4870X2 is more expensive than the GTX285, and that has an RRP of $US 400 I'm pretty sure as I think I linked nVidia's site before that tended to show it. So I guess you can stop being underwhelmed

If instead you mean because they're selling for stupid money second hand in the for sale section, then it doesn't really count - you could get two 4870s and crossfire them for less again.

(I've never really understood why ATI cards never sell for as much as nVidia cards in the forum...for some reason the nVidia cards hold their value better...never made sense to me why).

At the end of the day, if you don't see the value, don't buy one. I'll be standing in what will be a long queue of people wanting one - even more so when the mid-range cards arrive.
