Default DIY Flash Telephoto/Zoom?

Hey, got an awesome Sunak 433D

Was like $30, and got 2x 433AF's for $15 each (one also has the full to 1/16th manual power settings) and a Vivitar 3700 which, all four are GN120.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind being able to drastically zoom in one of the ones with manual power settings, for the effect of having a much greater intensity over area - fill for wild life etc.

If i made a snoot with reflective foil on the inside, would this achieve what I want?

Any third party attachments for this?

something like this I guess: http://www.birdsasart.com/accs.html#BEAMER

a homemade snoot sounds like a good practical idea to focus the flash in on an object at distant, try a rubber tube from bunnings or perhaps a black drainpipe as well?

Yeah I'll try that since its basically free

Also saw the better beamer uses fresnel sheet/lens, I think perhaps I can use magnifying sheet which should be the same thing from the cheapie store

I reckon get a glass lens with 3-5cm diameter and put it in the end of a tube with reflective aluminium sheet lining inside the tube.

Basically you will be focusing the light into a beam, just don`t point it at airplanes.

EDIT: Okay this just came into my mind. A camera lens is meant to focus light into the sensor, it could be used in reserve. Imagine sensor being replaced with a flash, lens should project flash to the right distance with exact field of view needed.

Take an old broken/damaged slr with similar range lens you are looking for, remove everything from the body and mount the flash at the back or it comes in the spot of the film. Use the lens to zoom and apeture ring to control the intensity.

Might work and might not work at all

If you have a totally enclosed snoot, coated on the inside with silver reflector/aluminium foil/whatever, then would stopping a lens down attached to it reduce intensity?

Majority of the light would have to travel through still I would think.

I had a 28-80 EF... I took it apart and its in pieces

Oh well, maybe that Zuiko 65-200mm f/4

I still like the lightweight portable fresnel sheet idea.

Stick the flash in the head of a 'dolphin' torch. Should aim the light a lot better. A snoot wouldn't really to a great job of focussing the light and projecting it much further. I imagine it would rather just 'blank out' the spill light.

Alternatively to a dolphin torch, a hand held spotlight. They will captue the spilled light and focus it forward as opposed to just blocking it off.
