Exactly. It's an excellent product.

I never said that Apple had the largest user base.

I said that Apple had the largest relevant and most profitable user base.

That is why companies are investing in iPhone optimised sites and applications.

It's the most desirable handset on the market.

Why would companies invest in second place platforms like Symbian or Win Mo?

We've got over one thousand smart phone handsets deployed at work.

Running multiple applications is not a requirement for the vast majority of business applications.

Believe it or not, people just want push mail and the ability to make calls.

yeah i hope 3 offers this, i had to buy my current iphone outright, would rather have it on a plan.

one thing i love about apple is their warranty service at the applestore, in and out, no problems, straight swap for brand new .. i guess tahts 1 good thing about them making bucketloads ... excellent service.

Because the second place platforms are actually first and second place with 8x as many users as a base, and are shipping more of each of them than Apple reducing the share that Apple does have?

Companies have been investing in WiMo/Symbian apps for the better part of the last decade.

The iPhone apps that sell, target a specific market, fortunately boosted by the iPod Touch. The sad thing for Apple is if they actually did obtain a significant market share their App store would be dismantled as anti-competitive (can you imagine windows forcing to buy all your games/applications though a Microsoft store with restrictions on what sort of applications you could develop so they didn't compete with their own ? ). So they're not looking to obtain that market share, they're just looking at keeping the small market share they have as profitable as possible.

Again, Apple have great marketing success, companies aren't developing iPhone optimised sites because of iPhone users, they're doing it to be seen to be 'with it'. They could just as easily as most do, simply make a mobile optimised site that works for all mobiles.

Just so people don't keep getting the sales and percentage facts confused.

I think the iPhone will become very, very popular, but Apple will never have more market share then the other as it has only one phone.

You're not getting it.

They are second place platforms because they are not the desirable choice for the majority of people.

The majority of people are stuck with Symbian or WinMo handsets because the bean counters at work gave them one or they couldn't afford an iPhone.

They aren't as likely to purchase applications or care about websites being optimised for their handset.

Gartner and IDC numbers are not fantastic - they've cut back heavily on their primary research budgets

It's going to take a little while but both Symbian and WinMo will have centralised App repositories / stores and they will be promoted in the handset UI. Then the userbase and developer base will start to grow like mad.

This is based off your opinion, my counter to that is based upon actual sales data. It seems, 'you' are not getting it.

If people are likely to be 'stuck' with a non iPhone, then it really doesn't matter how 'desirable' YOU find the iPhone. I think you'll find most WiMo phones are more expensive than the iPhone. So people are paying more for them, they're just getting much more for it.

The app stores for Symbian and WiMo are much much newer than the iPhone's app store, so despite them having many times more apps for the platforms, many fewer are in their stores, and in the case of WiMo, it's not likely to change until the next OS version. Even then, they would both face revolt if they forced users to buy all their apps through the app store, as both have tens of millions of users used to being able to write/buy/sell their own apps externally.

They most certainly ARE likely to care about websites being optimised for mobile, but they don't NEED them to be optimised for their particular handset. Mobile web browsing wasn't invented for the iPhone. I think you'll find very few sites specifically target the iPhone, and 99.9999% of those that do, also target other mobiles. Never mind that no site that requires Flash will work on the iPhone.

The type of users also, is likely to change as moves to cater for them are made.

I can't wait til the 'S' is released so we can ditch all this bullshit about what's popular and what's not and talk about the phone itself.

Still far to much money for a Chinese made mobile phone with novelty features.
