Ok so I installed the game last night, patched, got half way through the second tutorial (sort of a game against bots that teaches you to jungle etc as well). Then my girlfriend finished work early and just "decided to pop in" nothing worse on one of my rare "you get to game all nights" night.....but anyway tomorrow she will be at work ALL NIGHT so I get my first night long gaming in a month or so.

Here are a few questions I have for the good people of LoL after the limited time I had with it last night.

1) Is there a courier? HoN has taught me to stay in lane and last hit like a mofo, so it seems counter-intuitive for me to be recalling and running back to lane for items. Also like HoN can you buy from lane and leave it is a stash until you decide to recall?

2) Can you queue commands? Shift-queuing in HoN is a god send and wasn't able to work it out while I was practicing.

Was mucking around with Ryze, went 11-0 in practice tower diving and stuff it seems pretty straight forward, though I don't get how you unlock heroes I assume you just have to play more games to get more XP which in turns unlocks more heroes?

Will be in the OCAU channel tonight spamming for a few friends to have games with. Just to help with buying the right items etc. Though it seems far more simplistic than HoN so I shouldn't have too much trouble once I work out what heroes do what.

Just had a few more games vs yorick, in one i was brand, and well he was a joke. Having ghouls have more hp or immune/reduced dmg vs aoe would go a LONG way to making him viable imo

1) No courier, threw me at first as well. I think the trade off is the 'blue pill' hit B and its a base port that you always have and dont need an item for. Also no stash, but unlike HoN you dont lose gold on death so thats not a big issue. I usually grab boots + 3 pots early so i can maximise lane time.

2) Ive been playing a long time and still cant find any spell queing

edit: Xp = levels you up to 30 where the ranked games begin
IP = coins from HoN, it accumulates as you play and you can use it to buy runes or hero's although the rate you get it isnt the best
RP = purchased points for $$$, buy heros and skins (this is how they make there money). If you are seriously going to play this a lot id look into the 2 big hero packs for 20 bucks or so, they get you most of the original + first few released heroes

after a game you get rewarded both XP and IP

IP is the "currency" of lol and is used to buy new chmpions from the store along with runes, runes giving bonus stats and being unlockable at levels (not sure if this in HON) also i dotn belive there is spell queing, its more foced on manually being fast and somewhat "self" queing

There's no waypoint or spell queueing in the traditional RTS sense.

I believe there is a small spell queue window of about half a second (or less), to help people on high latency, but that is kind of a different story.

What you can do is 'smart' cast, or 'self' cast, by holding shift or alt respectively.

I would avoid spending any IP until you hit level 30. The earlier runes you can get become useless when you hit level 30, and being a HoN player you won't need them. The champions you can play for free change every week so you should get a go with most of them. Will also give you a chance to play everyone and see who you are comfortable with.

With regards to going back to base for items, you can run teleport to start off with which is a summoner spell that teleports you to any turret or friendly minion on the map. If you are playing a ranged carry just buy a dorans blade and play safe, you shouldn't need to go back too much. If you do just push the lane as much as you can and you will get back in time, or call a team mate to cover the lane for you.

Ideally your team will have a solo top lane, solo mid lane and two bottom lane with a jungle so the jungle should usually be around to cover a lane for you.

PS: I haven't played much of HoN so I'm not sure how much of this would be obvious to you.

Cheers mate, thanks for the info, I'm assuming level 30 takes a while to get to?

Oh the only other thing I forgot to ask was I assume match making works similar in LoL to HoN whereby I am matched with people that are the same level as me? I can't get put against level 50 summoners or anything in my first game can I?

Solo top and mid is pretty weird, so used to 2-1-2 or a tri lane :s

So jungling is normal in LoL as opposed to the exception...interesting

About 250 normal games... or 300ish if u do custom games.

It works the same, with a few caveats. eg If you win your first 5-10 games in a row, you will be queued with lvl30's etc, because the system will think you are a smurf.

Yeh, jungling is pretty essential in LoL, however don't be surprised if your team doesn't have one in the lower levels.

I disagree with dingledoog on the tier1 runes though. t1 runes give about 60% of the effectiveness of t3 runes, for about 5-10% of the cost.

Red Magic Pen
Red Armor Pen
Yellow Flat Armor or Yellow mana regen per level
Blue Flat Magic Resist or Magic Resist per level (i prefer flat)

Then you can make 2 pages, one for magic heavy champs and one for physical heavy champs... all for like 1k IP total.

NEVER buy tier 2 runes, they are useless. But those t1 runes will last you until 30, and then for as long as you want until you decide how you want to set up more specialised pages.

I disagree with dorans blade in most cases, unless you have a support champ with you too. I assume you are pretty decent at last hitting from your HoN experience, so you shouldn't need the +10 damage from the blad. Grab boots + 3 pots, as it will let you harrass/be harrassed more without having the recall. On your first back you can buy a dorans blade or two and upgrade to berserker boots for the allrounder stats

As long as you don't team up with higher levels you will be playing against other players the same level as you. Can't even remember how long it took me to get to level 30, like 100 games I guess. You can buy experience boosters which level you up a lot quicker, I wouldn't recommend it though. Level 30 is the maximum level in LoL, everything is available to you once you reach 30.

You will see 2-1-2 a lot early on and in normal games but if you play ranked you will almost always see a jungler. If you learn how to jungle properly you give your team a huge advantage, especially if the other team don't have one. Only problem is relying on the solo top lane being competent enough to handle the 2v1.

Definately second this, boots + 3 hp potions is a winner and grabbing some t1 runes is also a great idea.

This part really depends if you have a job/waste cash on games but RP really isnt expensive i just grabbed a whole bunch of heros when i first started and played a game with a new one each time. Best way to learn what your against/what you can do imo

edit: Are you sure 100 wins will get you to 30 ? seems awefully quick, mind you i leveled to 30 before they changed everything and wiped all the player stats.
Also been wondering if the tri-lane HoN strat would work in lol, but cant test it because i only play solo que

I think you can get by without them and personally would prefer to save IP for t3 runes later on. I always had trouble getting enough IP for runes though and it took me along time to fill my rune pages once I hit level 30.

I usually do it the other way round, get boots on my first back. If you're up against an AOE caster boots are pretty important early though.

Depends how many I lost in the process . I guess I could be wrong though. I had a mate who got to level 30 after only about 25 wins just with exp boosts so maybe this is influencing my memory of it.

You can certainly get by without any runes at all... but you wont be able to play as agressively, and could end up training some bad habits.

You can pretty much get a full set of t1 runes, for the cost of 1 t3 quint lol.

As for champs, I'd just play with all the free ones until you decide if you like the game or not. If you do, grab a boxed copy from eb games for 20bucks, then buy 20 bucks of RP to get the champion bundle, and that will give you like 2/3rds of the champs + some left over RP
