Interesting interview between AMD and a DICE developer on DX11 in Frostbite 2.0

Sounds good!

Edit: lol half way through it becomes a marketing campaign for AMD
Good Interview thanks Frontline!

I cant wait for this to be released. I still love BC2, but with a possible Karkand remake on Frostbite, that certainly is an e-wet dream for me

BF3 is spotting

Quote:
Battlefield 3 will feature 3D spotting, developer DICE has confirmed.

Spotting allows gamers to pin-point the location of enemies for the rest of their team. Once spotted, a soldier has a red triangle above his head and is singled-out on the game's mini-map.

Battlefield 3 senior gameplay designer Alan Kertz confirmed the feature via Twitter.

"Yes, there will be spotting," Kertz confirmed.

"2D spotting is a minimum," he added. "I want a form of 3D spotting that avoids, 'There, behind the tree.' 'What tree?'"

"I want a balanced 3D spot that works for a whole team."

"It's still early," he assured another enquirer, "there's still plenty to do, and it's not like I'm going to forget about spotting, or the issues it creates.

"Spotted enemies could have a bomb dropped on them by an orbital space cannon for all I've decided right now."

For Kertz, spotting evokes 'man on a hill picking out enemies for his long-range squad' teamplay that he's keen to encourage.

Kertz went on to assure that while soldiers can go prone in Battlefield 3 - i.e. lie on their stomachs - there will be absolutely no lying down while in mid-air. This is a technique called 'Dolphin Diving' and "is out", wrote Kertz - "Period."

Other differences between BF3 and Bad Company 2 include flyable jets and 64-player battles (on PC), as revealed already. The two games aren't directly related, which means features like the grappling hook and zip-line have been dropped.

There will be a knife, though, as well as dog-tags, although what purpose the latter serves Kertz wouldn't say.

Battlefield 3 will also have friendly fire, plus the bullet drop system from Bad Company 2. "Doesn't work the same as BC2 though, it's a much deeper system," Kertz explained.

DICE is leaving the Special Ops focus for the Medal of Honor series. Kertz wouldn't be drawn on anti-cheat features.

Kertz went on to confirm Iranian capital Tehran as one of the game's major locations. Shops outed this city alongside Paris and New York for Battlefield 3.

As with Battlefield: Bad Company 2, EA is betting big with Battlefield 3 - particularly in relation to the genre-dominating Call of Duty series. EA has already declared itself the most likely breeding ground for the next "Great FPS" - a title held by Infinity Ward and Modern Warfare 2, apparently.

Meh, spotting is mostly useless in hardcore mode which I hopefully assume will be in BF3.

If they make BF3 properly, they won't need a HC mode.

i kind of liked the old system in bf2, you relied on your squad mates/team comms to let you know where the enemy is, none of that spotting bs

it creates the CQC atmosphere in the urban settings, not knowing where the enemy might pop out

Spotting was in BF2, spotted enemies would flash on the minimap. Commander spamming spot was also an effective UAV at times (yes, I mastered this one quite proficiently ) to the point of you can almost aim via minimap and then engage.

well there will most likely be a server option to disable 3d spotting.

how many servers actually implement this will be interesting though.

Nada, around late Feb - March will get lots of stuff apparently. Proper unveiling of BF3 is at GDC, should get a proper trailer, lots of info and screenshots then. Also, people are hanging out for Game Informer magazine's coverage of BF3 (should be out later this month, not sure if it's available in Aus though).

Edit: Apparently someone already got their game informer issue, and this is what they have to say:

Quote:
-Aiming for CY Q4 2011 release
-Concept for BF3 has been in the works for years, waiting on proper tech to seamlessly come together
-Frosbite 2.0 is the culmination of this tech, entirely re-written
-Lighting sounds neat, one "probe" contains more lighting information than an entire BFBC2 level.
-Level destruction is going to be "believable" but basically everything is destructible.
-Character animations powered by ANT, what EA Sports uses.
-AI characters and multiplayer characters have different animation sets
-No more "gliding" animations that look off, animation realism is a focus
-Captured their own war audios (bullets, tanks, helicopters, etc) at different distances to ensure realism
-Better audio cues for certain actions, more easily able to listen for threats
-Plan on better, more immediate post release content
-More unlocks than BFBC2
-Dice trying to find a good balance between customization of your character and not having "pink rabbit hat(s)"
-4 classes
-Will talk about squads "later"
-Looking into a theater mode but can't talk about it
-Will have co-op
-There will be a kill-cam but it can be turned off
-BF3's team is almost twice as big as the team for BFBC2
-They want the pacing of the single player mode to be balanced, with highs and lows. Makes the comparison to a song vs a guitar solo.
-Part of the single player mode takes place in Sulaymaniyah - Iraqi Kurdistan.
-"fuck" will be used often, so M rates for sure
-There will be an earthquake in a level. The destruction sounds very impressive. 7 story building collapses, looks very well done
-Significant narrative that goes with the SP mode
-More than one setting, you're not in the middle east for the whole game
-PC version is lead version
-Why 64 players for PC only? No complains from the console crowd.
-No mod tools at release. Maybe none down the line either. Frosbite 2.0 is complex and mods tools would have to be dumbed down, so does Dice really want to put their time to that or would it be better spent elsewhere?

There was spotting in bf2, in fact it was better implemented there than in bc2. in bf2 if you saw an enemy run behind a tree or building you could still call where he was, it would just put a question mark on the point you were looking at in the mini map.

That was one thing i missed with bc2. Having orange triangles running around was way too easy. At least with bf2 everything was confined to the mini map.

We had some really talented modders for bf2, is this a bit of a kick in the face to them by saying they would have to dumb it down?
