Question Win XP Academic purchase limits?

Are you restricted to a single copy of Windows XP when purchasing the academic version? I have two networked PC's at home that will each require a separately purchased copy of Windows XP. I can't afford to get two at the same time, but one now and one later is the plan if that's allowable. Anyone else had experience in this area?

I have no idea, but may be not!

In case one company does not let you buy two in a row, buy it from two different companies

Don't they take your student card details when you purchase and mail them off to Microsoft though? I really don't want to get a nasty letter from them sometime down the track, demanding I hand over my first born child for violating their EULA.

i don't see why you can't buy more than one academic copy.
if you qualify for an academic copy, you should be allowed to buy as many as you want.

I have purchased academic versions of software before, though not operating systems and they have never asked for my student card to be photocopied and sent to microsoft. But then this was a couple of years ago, and the academic software was restricted in functionality. Ask the retailer, usually they only have to sight your card before selling it to you.

i was under the impression that the academic version was identical to the full version - just cheaper so students can afford it..?

So you can't buy a bunch and give them all to your friends... or worse, sell them to your friends!

The only difference I see with acadamic software is the red label on the shrink warp...

No there are differences between academic versions and full retail versions, but this depends entirely on the package. As far as I'm aware, the OS packages and MS Office and the like are merely packaged versions of full software, whereas Matlab and the like are restricted functionality versions of full software.

Like I said, this depends entirely on the software, but for MS you should be getting the full versions (i think).

depends on what software you're buying.
i've seen graphics software (or maybe it was CAD?) with the academic version was discounted by about $1200.

OS's are usually a couple of hundred dollars cheaper. from memory, i think you can pick up a full working academic edition of winxp pro for about $150-200.

h2k, what's to stop people doing that anyway? it's not just students that do those things. lol

EDIT: check out ISWH
http://www.iswh.com.au/nav/iswh.asp
type academic into the search box and you'll see all the academic version software they sell.

EDIT again: the huge discount i was trying to think of before, was for autoCAD 2002. full retail =$7.6k. full academic= $600

an upgrade version can still be used to make a clean install.
you just need to have the cd from a previous windows version.

if you contacted them, they could probably get a full version. i'm sure they used to have it listed a while back.
