As for the Target Shooting mandatory attendance... You have to shoot a minimum of 4 times a year for each class of licence and atleast 6 times a year total. So for me with Class A and Class B, i would need to attend 8 times. I can see myself attending 8 times in the first 10 weeks.... but i'd still rather not feel obliged to go do something if i don't have to. Does anyone shoot at St Mary's in Western Sydney? |

Nice idea for a thread. Like the rem 700.
I am an IPSC pistol shooter myself. Here are some pics of my pride and joy, my custom built .38 Super Open gun. SVI parts, C-More 6MOA red dot, 3xbarrel ports and 3 port compensator. It's a wonderful pistol Click to view full size! Click to view full size!

![]() I shoot at St. Marys sometimes, it's not too bad. Haven't really had a good look around, just gone straight to the 50m range directly in front of the shop counter. I guess they've got pistol ranges, etc. EDIT: If you're using hunting club membership (thru SSAA) to support hunting on your licence, you need to attend an extra 2 times. So 6 total for me (cat A+B, targets & hunting). Last edited by GooSE; 16th July 2009 at 9:09 PM. |

I have nearly finished the Journey from Non SHooter, to owning my rifles.
I did the safety course back in April on the 18th, I've done everything A.S.A.P as in getting paperwork in same day, Look forward to a 3.5 to 4 month wait to getting a rifle. The easiest way is joining the SSAA. License will take about 2 months. Than the PTA's take 28 days +. They (Weapons Licencing Branch) are very overloaded at the moment and things are taking time. I'm pretty sure you'll need 40+ acres to fullfill their requirements for vermin control. Not totally 100% on that tho. As mentioned by Rass, The SSAA Belmont range allows non licenced shooters, you'll need to do paperwork (Form 33) which states you've got no issues which would stop you from obtaining a licence. Belmont is $20 for non SSAA members IIRC, Rifle hire is $8 per hour. so it's about $33.50 for a .22 rifle and ammo (50). There is also a SSAA range on the sunshine coast. |

You're right, my bad. I was confusing the pistol requirements with the longarm requirements.

Hah, consider it done.
I'm going to give them a call at lunchtime to confirm day and gun hire costs, some friends and I are going to go down on Sunday hopefully for an hour or two and I'll organise membership while I'm there. Thanks very much to all above for the info Cheers

Well, Just got off the phone to the SSAA blokes out at Belmont, nice guy I spoke to on the phone, very friendly! I guess they want as many people interested as possible, heh.
Final word on costs is as follows $27 non members/ unlicenced, as mentioned above have to fill out form 33 declaration by unauthorised person for use of a weapon at an approved range you need photo id fully enclosed shoes $8/hour for rifle hire, that's flat rate for whatever gun you choose ammunition ranges from .22 to .308, costed accordingly I'll DEFINITELY be heading out on Sunday now!

A few points - Don't wear camo clothing. Bring a handful of thumbacks or a stapler to affix your target. Hearing protection is a must - you can buy earplugs there. Don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for help - range officers are approachable. Follow the direction of the range officers. Keep the muzzle of the firearm pointed either at the sky (when you are moving to or from the firing line) or downrange (when you are at the firing line). When moving with the firearm, ensure the action is open and clear. When handing a firearm to another person, ensure the action is open and clear. Generally there are two states when you are on the range- 1) range open - you can procede to the firing line, handle firearms and shoot targets 2) range closed - you cannot touch firearms or ammo, but can move freely forward of the firing line to inspect or place targets. Firearms are to be in an unloaded state with the action open and on the table or gunrack. initialy when the range is closed, you will open the action of your firearm, ensure the chamber is empy and place it on the table or gunrack so that it inspectable by the range officer. You then move back away from the firing line until the range is cleared by the officers. All of this is accompanied by sirens and PA speaker announcements, so you'll know what is expected of you. edit - I also usualy bring a ragged old towel. never know when you might need it (the edges of the bench can be painful if you lean on them).

Thanks yet again for the helpful tips. Many of your suggestions ring a lot of bells as the handful of times I have used a firearm (on a property and once at a range in nsw) I remember them saying all the same stuff.
But you can't be told enough times! Safety safety safety important if you want everyone to have a good time and no accidents to occur for sure.As for the camo gear, why's that just out of curiosity? Not that I intend on going in camo gear, just wondering
