If you take the digital out to a 5.1 decoding amp or separate component it does

5.1 is a term which is used to describe the amount of speakers in your setup. 5 and the .1 being a sub. Now for those speakers to be used effectively the soundtrack must be encoded very specifically. Ie for a movie when a car zooms past from left to right. The coding signature might be. Car noise start left. Car noise left and centre. Car noise centre. Car noise centre right. Car noise end right. Nothing like that but you get the idea. Now if all this is coded in 1's and 0's it has to be decoded somewhere in the chain. This can either be done at the DVD player. A separate box inbetween the dvd player and amp known as funnily enough a decoder. Or at the amp itself.
