Just finished adding more space to my Ubuntu server

With about 6TB storage in total.. not counting my main rig which I really don't store things on anyway.

I horde/store the usual Software,Movies,TV Series/Shows, Music, Photos, Userfiles

My aim was to have a centralised repository for files. But most importantly to serve the media content to two networked media players in the house as well as any other computer on the network.

The server also hosts two Virtual Machines, and my home web server.

I ran out of sata ports so got myself a good deal on an Adaptec 5405 Raid card (This card runs toasty hot).

I also needed a better solution to mounting the drives in the server so got two Icy Box IB-555SSK 5 in 3 modules as well. I love these things as I can now add an remove drives without opening up the case.

I am running a raid 1 on the Userfiles folder via the Adaptec.
I also backup a subset of these files an semi external drive through the last hotswap bay on the bottom.

My really important files, daily email pst's backups, various personal files and images of VMware virtual machines I run are backed up onto tapes through an AIT1 tape drive weekly.

The rest of the drives are still on the sata ports on the motherboard.

I am looking at the Areca 1230 12 port for some further Raid 6 and 1 action with even more drives. I will then also move the Adaptec to my main rig for some SSD Raid loving when the prices comes down.

Will definitely have to upgrade the PSU, case and Ubuntu OS when this next step comes into play. Maybe the motherboard , cpu and ram if i have the spare cash.

But I should be good to go for now I think.

What software runs the virtual machines - and what do you use the virtual machines for?

What case is that? It looks like it already has 2 of those module things - pretty cool, can fit 5 hdds in 3x 5.25" drives?

So all your hdds are running onto the mobo with no raid, can't you use your adaptec card as a normal sata controller with no raid?

Sorry for the questions

Hi,
I have roughly 15TB.
I am sick of burning cds/dvds for the kids when all they do is scratch the cds..

now i just stream through the xbox.

I have drives for dvdr/movies/tveps etc...all backups of course.

running:
10x 750gb raid 6
6x 1.5tb raid 5
2x 750gb raid 0
2x 750gb raid 0
2x 750gb raid 0

The rest of the hd's are just on there lonesome.

These drives are raided into a box using 2 case's, made by myself and neighbour.

17.5Tib of storage + 400gb windows drive + 540GB of unpartitioned space (my windows drive is 3X 320GB drives short stocked to +-400gb

so in total that would be 18.46TiB (all in one case for lanning goodness)

once win7 Comes out i will grab whatever SSD is best at the time (128gb or some such) and use the full capacity on my 3X 320gbs (might trade them for some 500gb 5400rpms drives on the forums)

and its all backed up on tape (27 LTO3 tapes so far)

No probs...

The VM's are running on VMWare server on top of Ubuntu Server.
One VM is Running XP. The other VM is currently running trial Versions of MS Server 2003 and Exchange server.. I use the VM's to experiment with MS Server setup, Exchange Server setup and Domains... for work purposes.

I am using the Adaptec to run raid 1 on my userfiles drive (2 x 1TB). It would be a shame to use it as a normal card.. I found a good deal on it so I snapped it up. I really wanted something of the 12 port variety.

The rest of the drives, 2 x 1TB and 2 x 1.5TB are currently on the sata ports of the mobo as normal drives.

Will get more drives, a 12 port RAID card migrate these to raid 6 and raid 1 arrays when I get more cash.

The case is an ICute S901
http://icute.com.tw/english/S901.html

Just fit everything in with this case, but I need more case depth as the mobo sata ports are too close to the backs of the Icy Dock 5 in 3's.

Everything is just too cramped for my liking.

The new components I just installed were, the Icy docs, 2 x 1.5TB, 1 x 1TB drives and the Adaptec 5405 card.

Don't really see the point in raid (for myself), never had problems with speed etc, or wanting to ever have backup etc.
