Default i7 920 2.66 - 3.2

Howdy!

Recently upgraded to i7 920, GB EX58-UD3R, 6gb DDR3 1333 ram, HD4890cf, 1000wt psu and a Noctua NH-C12P.

I wanted to oc my old system but ended up upgrading :P now I heard the 920 can oc quite nicely, I dont want to go crazy OC but I want to get around 3.2. I have done a fair bit of research and gone through the bios with out actually commiting to the over clocking. I wanna get some help with settings atm ill put down what I know so far.

Multi- 20x
BCLK- 160
Mem ??
Uncore ??
QPI 1.25v (alot of ppl said the stock voltage should be fine)
Mem 8-8-8-20 (pretty sure thats 1333 ram)
IOH core ???
DRAM voltage ??

I don't currently have a i7 but from overclocking on the skt 775 I can tell you that the readings of 8-8-8-20 are known as memory timings.

Like a Delay before a write cycle or something (lower the number, the better/faster)

Lowering the Timings will give you ram more chance of fail and does not have anything to do with 1333Mhz (you can have 800MHz ram at 8-8-8-20)

QPI voltage I'm not sure about, but on sockets 775, the QPI is known as the FSB.

Easy overclocking is done by raising the FSB or Raising the Multiplier (If CPU allows)

But because this is about i7s I can't give much more information about overclocking because I think it would be different in how you go about it. good luck though.

With an overclock as light as 3.2ghz you can really leave everything at defaults except change this BCLK- 160 and leave everything else stock auto.

Very easy to overclock the core i7 I currently have 3.8ghz and all I needed to change was the vcore to 1.32v and BCLK- 190 all other settings auto.

So...for 3.2...ONLY change blck to 160, and nothing else? There's no need to fiddle with RAM settings (1333 mhz here) either?

160 bclk.

Just choose the Ram Multi that works for you. 8x for example will give you 1280mhz, close enough.

Will his QPI auto adjust for him?

cheers guys,

I went to 3.2 stable and only needed to change blk, 1.32v and changed ram multi to 6x to be on the safe side. But I seeing as its just as simple going from 3.2-3.8 using same steps and changing ram multi to 8x I will try tonight.

If you are only going for a 3-3.3ghz overclock you should be able to det your Vcore to around 1.15v (mine is at 1.1325V or 1.1 after vdroop this is for 3.3ghz with turbo mode turned off)

im waiting on my msi x58m and my i7-920 and im already planning ahead, and i want to go to 3.2ghz (based on results from hothardware 3.2ghz seems to be a nice sweet spot, small overclock right before the expontential increase of efficiency stops)

http://hothardware.com/Articles/Over...cessor/?page=8

can i run a 3.2 overclock with the i7920 d0 stepping with stock cooling? or should i go ahead and start planning to order a TRUESPIRIT+120mm?

Anyone tested a stable 3.2 overclock on a d0 with stock or with a truespirit? Is 3.4 in sight on stock or definitely aftermarket cooler needed?

For 3.2, the stock cooler is fine. For 3.4...it's probably alright, but you'd be better getting an aftermarket one. At least that way you have the leeway to go even higher if you get adventurous.

for some reason now my computer will not boot if I have my settings at 3.2 ne more. It happend when I had a black out so atm I am running stock settings. sometimes I will turn the comp on and hang on the mobo screen from there I turn off the power at the switch to reset then go will load up. Also another strange thing, why does it say my memory is 1066 when it is ddr3 1333 ram?

Would the message be coming up because of the ram? I am going to set the ram to 1333 tonight and try to oc again. Should I restore to default and try again?

1066Mhz with the CPU speed at stock settings yeah?

I think it is because it is matched with the CPU speed (something along those lines)

You would have noticed that when you went to 3.2Ghz, your RAM speed would have automatically updated in your bios to something like 1200Mhz from 1066Mhz.

I, until recently, had only the stock cooler for my i7920 and yeah I used to only change the backclock. I think I had it running at around 3.5ghz with all the different voltages @ stock settings. Temps stayed the same as stock settings (so 80C under load LOL terrible cooler). The ram was running at around 1330Mhz (rated for 1333Mhz), anymore changes in my BLCK under auto settings would have made my ram run faster than rated. (something you might want to keep in mind)

I noticed when it went above the 1066 but still stayed under 1333, but on the left of it it still said 1066. I try running the uncore @ 13 (2x+1) and still wont let me have the ram over 1066.

I currently have it at 3.2 running ram multiplier of 6x

I have also found out the times when my computer will not boot, removing the memory then putting it back in will alow it to boot. Would this be something to look at in the bios (voltage ect) because I still cant get the ram at anything over 1066. Or would it be to do with the ram it self?

I've just got myself an i7 920 also, and went to 3.15GHz on all auto, only changing the bclk. I've got 1600mhz ram which is currently sitting at 1500mhz (i've only had it running 2 days so i'll need to play around with that).
But I also had an issue before I got the final values (set at 3.2GHz using the software which came with the board) where it wouldn't post, but it turned itself on/off about 3 times then reset it back to default for me (how nice of it).
So I did the rest manually in BIOS and have had no issues since.
Idle is nice at 29-32 degrees and peaks at about 60 under burn with stock cooler.

It's a c0 stepping also.
