Hey experts
I'm looking to buy a decent set of headphones for when I start a new job in two weeks' time. Long story, but I'm working in the same office but for a different department, and the people in my old department are mostly loud-mouthed idiots who I'd rather block out. Of course, that isn't the only reason for the headphones I will be doing a fair amount of work cutting and editing audio and video so sound quality and a nice, long cord would be a bonus too. My budget is around $100, stretched to maybe $130 if necessary. I have had a couple of cheap pairs of Sennheisers before and I quite liked them. Suggestions? I've been browsing headphones.com.au a bit and I like the look of the Shure SRH420 or the Sennheiser 428s as far as design goes. Any idea when the 428s are due for release? |

hey guys and gals,
i was wondering what would be your opinion on a decent headset that aint gonna cost an arm @ leg. so around $100. i purchased the Cyba Sniper Sonar 5.1 headset and found out when i bought them that there is a problem with the mic on steam (heaps of static comes through the mic and you cant clear it up but other non steam games work fine), That annoyed me cause i play CS:S alot and i cant communicate with my fellow team mates. So anyone have any ideas what headset will be decent and will work with steam games. thanks in advance Kangaroo_kid12

There are no decent "5.1" headsets - as you've discovered. Stereo headphones do everything 5.1s claim to do, only better, because it's not about more, cheaper drivers, it's about having two good ones.

Yup, the above poster is right. 5.1 headsets are a gimmick. You get a MUCH better result spending it on a good pair of headphones and a clipon mic.

Right, so I think it's about time I retired my AD700s. They are being held together with sticky tape and dodgy solder jobs. What would be the next step up from the AD700? I want something just as comfortable, just as easy to drive and even better sounding. Don't really mind if they are open or closed, but I guess since I really loved my AD700s, open would be preferable. How are the AD900s? are the AD1000s worth spending extra money for? What about other brands? Or maybe I should just get another pair of AD700s, or even try and get them repaired?
Thanks guys

The AD1000 is better suited to classical and jazz than the AD900 does, if that's what you listen to. |

Have you ever listened to a pair of Sony MDR-7509s? I have a pair but they're getting fairly uncomfortable from use, and with the trouble I'm having getting replacement pads I'm looking at new headphones. Any idea how they stack up against some <$500 headphones? I tend to do music listening from non-amped sources. Last edited by Mercora; 24th August 2009 at 9:49 AM. Reason: Typo. |

A long time ago yeah, we've got a few customers that have upgraded from them to models like the Beyer DT250 or similar (studio use). |

I started off with an etymotic er6i, then went down to a cheaper headdirect re2.
I'm now looking for something a little better than both without splurging, since I also have to buy an mp3 player to go with it (anyone want to recommend one?) |

How's it compare to the re1? The price much higher. And how much better is it compared to the re2? Contemplating buying the re0 from you soon.
I see the re1 and 2s require amp to sound good. What are your thoughts? edit: just read a review from head-fi "re0 beats er4p, rivals er4s" http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f103/r...-er-4p-405947/ Should an amp go with it? Someone suggested a fiio 3.

I have tried the RE0 with my iPod Classic unamped, with the fiio e5, and with my home headphone amp, and although there is a difference, the re0 sounds fine without an amp. (Although the amp in the ipod classic is supposed to be much stronger than the ones in the nanos and shuffles). I havent tried the fiio e3, but I heard that it has a hissing problem, especially with sensitive iems such as the re0.
