I guess with any headphones, they'll sound sound better with asoundcard+amp and with a little bit of eq tweaking , but they'll sound even better if they've been burned in.

It's not so much the act as the concept.

People think that if you leave your headphones playing music for a while (often ridiculous figures are made up like 200 hours) that they'll sound better afterwards.

The idea comes from speakers, because they have flexible cones which loosen over time, changing the sound.

I haven't read anything that comprehensively proves or disproves burn in...

My understanding of polymer membranes was that they would change elastic properties slightly when first used, and keep similar ones unless overstretched. I'm not saying the solid state electronics or magnets burn in.

I've read plenty of opinions from level headed audiophiles that it's BS. I've never heard it with any of my headphones. Or Amps (god forbid). I've heard phones at Headphonic that have been on the demo bench for a couple of years and there's no difference in sound at all to the same ones I bring from home.

I blame head fi for a lot of it. Burn in is practically a religion there. And like a religion, as nothing can be proven one way or the other, they worship. And wage war against anyone who doesn't believe, using the argument that you have to disprove it to refute it. Scientific method doesn't approach things with the aim to disprove, but also can't be used to prove it.

It's Russell's Teapot and the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Either way, if you're looking for burn in to change the sound of phones you don't like, you're going to spend an awfully long time not liking them.

Yeah i get that... I know with my proline 650's the bass could be so punchy it was painful at first, now it's not.
I think it was burn-in, but honestly can see that it could just be my head getting used to it over the much smoother-midrange sounding shure's.
