Talking Sid Meier's Games - Your Favourite?

Something written by praiseB here got me thinking about this.

If praiseB can quite happily play almost a day's worth of CivIII, he must be a Civ addict like me.

What's your favourite?

Mine would probably be CivIII or Alpha Centauri. Every now and then, I'll pull these games out and quite happily spend the best part of a day or three playing them through.

Cal.

CivII. The right combination of graphics/gameplay to make it addictive. Plus, it runs windowed, so I can browse the net/instant message/change tunes in winamp while conquering the globe

Best Sid Meier game? SimGolf! I absolutely love it (even if it is a Sim game) :P

On the topic of Civ III, please explain why spearmen can destroy tanks. I never quite grasped that...

You can't ask a question like this and expect people not to wrangle over which is their favourite.

Wrangling over, I am going to go with CivII. I've played that game from sunset to sunrise. There was a thread awhile back, which got lost in the "great forum crash", which pointed out that Alpha Centauri was not Sid Meier games, but designed by someone else and packaged with Sid's name on them

Hmmm.
I'd rank Civ 3 at the top, with Civ 2 and SMAC in equal second. I felt that SMAC was too short, but thankfully it was designed the same way as the other civ games so that you could edit the game's end point to suit yourself.
I love the configurability of the game- don't like how something plays? Change it.
Great stuff.

The customisation that you can do in SMAC is something that I love too.

Want to build the uber-unit? You can. Tank, Chopper, Gravship, whichever.

Best thing was, of course, having orbital drop pods on Colony units - both sea and land, and have bases popping up everywhere.

Some poll you've got there...

Sid Meier made the original Civilization and played a small part in the making of Civ2. The rest just have his name on it.
