Looking at server AV software, whats everyones recommendations.

Have used and been very happy with Nod 32 before, just wondering if there is anything better on the market?

Have Used CA aswell but didn't think much of that and talking to ppl who have been selling it they have had alot of trouble with this years CA versions

does Kaspersky have a Server AV package, tried to have a look but there is just far too many options for that software

I've been using NIS2011 for a while now and while I know, LOTS OF PEOPLE HERE HATE NORTON, I can honestly and truly recommend it.

Installation - although not a lot of people care about this, but I can tell you was the fastest I've ever seen. It was definitely faster than any other antivirus I've installed on my PC previously.

Scans - when your computer idles, Norton scans without lagging the crap out your comp and immediately stops when you move the mouse. A very nice feature to have imo; and is definitely handy

Isn't resource hungry - Norton is very responsive, and although I don't really like the layout of the UI, it doesn't lock up your whole PC when it quarantines/scans a file much like KIS2011 does. However, one thing I do dislike about Norton is that it immediately deletes/quarantines a file if it finds a threat. And there is no way to recover that file.

Also, I missed the sandbox feature of KIS2011 when I changed to Norton. Another downfall. But other than that NIS2011 is a solid product with a very good SONAR system.

If you haven't tried it, I encourage you to do so. My friend, after months of nagging, eventually got me to download and install it and I was quite shocked with the improvements from past versions (06, 07, 08). It is very lightweight and user-friendly now compared to the absolute trash it was some years ago.

On an ending of that note, I would like to ask if anyone here has tried the ESET NOD32 Smart Security 5. The UI looks very attractive and easy to use, and it does certainly look lightweight. How is the heuristic detection on it? Does it freeze your whole PC when you attempt to delete a file? Is there a sandbox feature? Same questions for KIS2012 please? Anyone tried it?

I would continue to use Norton unless I can find a better solution before the final comes out. I believe it is currently in beta.

Good roundup here for all you security nuts: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/fea...d_and_compared

I take computer/internet security pretty serious, but it's usually not me that needs the protection, rather the rest of my family
Staying on-top of updates etc for the family can be a pain but it's better than having to format their computers like I have had to twice in the past.

You have OS updates, anti-virus/spyware/malware updates, hardware updates (modem firmware, BIOS updates etc), browser updates, and then other random program updates that can affect security like flash player and MS word

While most of them are automatic, a lot of the time they won't automatically upgrade if there is a large new version eg AVG won't automatically jump up a full version, windows doesn't jump from XP to 7 by itself etc

I'm currently running MSE. For a free AV, can I do better than this today?

Free? no, although Avast is a decent alternative, MSE is still better

Anyone who knows anything about windows

Being in the retail IT service industry I quickly learned the best method for me was turning and burning windows installations. Let Windows defender do it's psultry job, fill the OS full of garbage until it starts to slow down and them rinse and repeate

Can anyone comment on Panda Cloud antivirus?

I saw it installed on a laptop we got as a trade in, and was impressed with it's lightness.

I usually install AVG free for people, because it's free, and doesn't require registration.

I use avast on my main system, but I don't like installing it on other people's systems because it needs to be registered, And some people are clueless or don't even use email. So they let it lapse and void their protection.

For those that don't know
  • Scans are performed in 'The Cloud' online servers - frees up local system resources (Ideal for slow PCs)
  • Uses minimal bandwidth (avg <200KB per day)
  • No need to download antivirus definitions
  • When offline, local cached definitions will be used

I'm interested to know what it's like on a day to day basis.
  1. Are false detections common?
  2. Does it nag or trick people into buying the paid version?
  3. Is it likely to autodelete a folder full of keygens etc?
  4. How well does it handle program updates?

I installed it for a while about a year ago, uninstalled and stuck with avast.
[*]Does it nag or trick people into buying the paid version?

Not that i saw

[*]Is it likely to autodelete a folder full of keygens etc?

Some files considered a threat by panda will be deleted, such as certain keygens and activators.
