im going to say stick with the AVG, its free and its pretty good at what it does. a no frills alternative.

Or you can buy the full AVG protection.

Yep on Nortons 2009 - used corp edition for years then went off it and used Zone Alarm Internet for a couple of years worked great on XP but then Vista came along and it was no good - then went onto Free AVG but you get what you pay for (misses plenty) so went onto Kaspersky which is great but overly complicated interface - now back to Nortons 2009 - so far so good.

You say removal of Norton halves those times, so boot up still takes 5 minutes? I'd say there's an underlying problem there that has nothing to do with Norton.

And it sure as hell doesn't cause delays of several minutes to browse folders...
When I say boot time I mean the time from when the desktop comes up to when the hard drive stops churning and the PC is usable.

The reason I attribute norton to causing all these problems is the fact that it was using over half my cpu everytime I loaded anything up. The norton cpu meter confirmed this.

There are still viruses/trojans for macs just less of them. The only reason there are less is because more people use windows, it is just a false sense of security.

That's not true, for if we were to rely on popularity being a cause and caustation then linux would have never had to worry about viruses, but it had a few viruses just like mac had viruses back in the old os 8/9 etc days, and then they fixed the issue unlike ms who bandaid the crap out of it and scary marketing people working at BS companies like Symantec, Kapersky etc freak the hell out of some ignorant IT people, then the ignorant IT people think they're PRO HACKERS by responding to threads like this and having ESET NOD42 installed instead of the nortons 2006 INTERNET SUPER SAVER that mum and dad have installed who runs that anymore I bet they still use KAZAA LOL anyway... as has been discussed your wrong, this whole freakin thread has been done before a million times and I'm only posting here because I like to think I'm a pro hacker.

I have not tired nortons since 2007...and even the corp editon was better but was still slow...

since awhile iv used NOD32 and NOD32 security - both are exceptional in speed and not being memoary hungry...i recommend NOD32...

try the trial - you wont be disappointed!

Oh, really ? There are no known viruses and maybe 5 known troyans on OSX. And to install troyan you have to install it yourself which is pure stupidity (noithing beats it)

I personally switched to mac when even with 2 antiviruses I somehow got my windose corrupted beyong repair by some sort of malware. Now I can browse anything on the web without being afraid of picking some crap.

Kaspersky is not a bad antivirus - call its subscription "Windows Tax"

I don't think it is 100% true in all cases but I think there is some amount of truth to it. So it's a matter of degree's.

I'm currently using Webroot Antivirus & Spyware with Webroot Firewall.

Bought it after a long search on the internet and it has some of the best reviews out there.

It's fairly cheap too - 40 dollars I think for antivirus with spyware sweeper attached.

Webroot firewalls was free.

Hasn't let me down yet and is 'very' protective.

Only issue I had was the first day where it was blocking all the bad sites and told me every 3 seconds which ones it had blocked, but other than that - is fantastic. Firewall has a learning period (that you can adjust to make shorter / longer if you really...really want) so it won't let anything happen without your say so for a little while. After this, it's very good

I 'highly' recommend it after coming from AVG, Avast, BitDefender (was good, but very simple - I like to learn a little bit) and it's certainly great value.

Didn't like AVG so now have Avast.

No complaints

If I paid for one I would use Nod32

A recent bloody stupid mistake by me (perhaps I'll blog about it and post it), got my own Windows XP system severely infected. It prompted me to go back to Linux full-time. And it is such a blessing and it's a shame more people refuse to experience a virus free operating system and reap one of it's greatest benefits.
