I did but I don't want active resident protection which is mainly what these products that are being reviewed are tested for. I just want scheduled scans and right click scanning ability which is why I chose clamwin.

You can turn off real time functionality (and resident processes) in almost all AV/AM packages. That way you can still benefit from the better detection and discrimination capabilities of some software over others.

Its a free world, so each to their own , but it strikes me as a poor reason to pass up some of the better AV programs.

Try having a crack at employing some form of grammar or even correct spelling next time, it might just make it possible to interpret your posts

Yes this is correct but a lot of them have large startup times if you disable them completely nad want to scan one single file. Some also don't allow you to disable the resident program completely. Now I am happy to give some of the big names that these reviews give out a shot but I am a bit stumped to which one is better for my needs. I've posted over on their forums, but perhaps from your experience which program would be better for my needs?

That being shell integration (so you can right click and scan) schedule scans, but zero real time scanning and protection.

In terms of features, its probably best to have a shop around and look at some trial implementations.

Free:
Avira - Set 'AntiVir Guard' to 'Deactivate', this will leave you with only the scanner. Nice and simple.

In terms of paid for stuff I only have experience with NOD32, which for years has always been a strong performer in testing and still does well. Not sure about the others, you'd have to trial them to see if they fit your needs.

Currently I'm using ESET Smart Security 4, as I like having a software firewall. I have a firewall in the router as well, but the software one makes it simple to be fairly aware of what programs are sending things in and out, to whom, from and to where, using what processes and when.
All features can be disabled in NOD32 as far as I'm aware, it seems to be very modular in structure, however I leave them all running as I don't have any issues with boot up or lag that others seem to be getting (and think is caused by AV).

If I was considering buying now, I would have a hard look at G-Data, as far as I know that can be parred down to on demand scanning only with relative ease, and it is producing very good results across the board. As mentioned though, have a quick shop around and trial the ones you are interested, see if they offer much more to you, for your needs, than what Avira does.

I believe it should read;

KasperskyAvast/Avira/Sopho? (Anti virus 2009 is a virus. How scammy is that).

Comes down to what best suits the individual, there is no definite answer to 'what is the best AV'.

Norton is the most supported as the technicians come out and install a hardware firewall, etc.

BS!
I had Norton - once upon a time, but I never saw any technician coming out and installing anything.
I suspect Stablez was being "cased"...

i use AVG and Avira free

avira definitely picks up on alot more than avg. It has pop ups to warn you of viruses on sites, etc

I've been trialing Kaspersky IS 2010 (previous AVG free 8). Kaspersky certainly slowed my system down alot. It did detect a trojan or two (trojan came in .zip file and wasn't there when AVG was installed).

Pffft "hardware firewall"

Buy any $50 router and theres your "Hardware Firewall", how much did Norton charge for that.

AVG made me waste many hours for a barrage of stuff that got past it recently.

Even more when you pay for it. My dad subscribed at home, and the anti-rootkit component immediately destroyed Alcohol 120%'s rootkit-like cloaker. And borked a whole load of stuff, like half the drivers on the damn PC, with it. With no ability to undo, ignore or anything else. Except reinstall... boo. Uninstalled on my lappy now, using Avast happily so far.
