Default CANON 7D

Release has to be imminent, rumours mills are a'flyin. Also 3 news lenses on the horizon.

Well, here it is, one step closer to being official. The Canon EOS 7D making another appearance, as in leaked, in of course a Chinese forum. Not only do we get a decidedly good look at the camera (and 3 new lenses, an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, and an EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, and an EF 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM Macro), but we also have the specification rundown. Since I’m assuming we don’t all speak Chinese, the highlights include:

* 18 megapixels
* Dual DiG!C 4 imaging processors, 14-bit A/D signal conversion
* 8 FPS (94 Large/Fine JPEGS or 15 RAW)
* 19 points cross type AF sensors. Eight-directional double cross central AF point
* ISO 100-6400, extends to 12800
* 100% coverage, 1.0x optical viewfinder with intelligent display, with electronic horizon line.
* 3.0″ LCD, 920,000 dot resolution, 160 degree viewing angle
* New iFCL meter system using high contrast and color detection (63-zone)
* Newly-designed streamlined body, metallic shutter sound, shutter lifespan approx. 150,000 times
* HD movie, HDMI out, external mic input
* EOS Integrated Dust Removal system
* Live view with Face-priority AF
* Auto Lighting Optimizer
* Auto correction of lens peripheral illumination (vignetting)
* New switch for Live View/Video mode
* New 24mm wide-angle built-in flash supporting EOS E-TTL II

No additional clarity on the sensor size, though I think we should assume the 1.6x APS-C as the most likely reality. The marketing approach so far appears to rely on the higher resolution and speed of the 7D over the D300s. I can only hope that Canon has made some advances with their sensor technology to justify putting 18 megapixels on an APS-C sensor. We shall see.

I've been following the updates for a while on the 7D at canonrumors.com

Its tempting to get, but I wanna see the finished spec sheet. They increased the MP count for a crop and every1 is spewing about it. But who knows maybe there will be less noise on this only time will tell.

Supposebly there was a strong rumor coming through that the 7D had built in master capability (no need for ST-E2). but the following rumours had no mention of it.

If it does have the built in wireless, that will be the deal maker and i'm gonna pull the trigger. I was hoping for a FF with the same specs, but Canon can't start by pull all the tricks outta the bag.

An xD with a 1.6 crop sensor? Doesn't make sense. Looks more like a 50D on roids if anything.

Seeing that some of Canons best primes were outresolved by the 50D, I think there'll be bigger problems than noise when it comes to reviews, (and possibly sales).

Yeah but if it is can't you simply downsize the image to 12mp for instance and run noise ninja over it or similar?

Don't really get the mp debate a huge amount, unless you're losing huge amounts of detail in the shots. If a camera retains detail well, even if it looks fairly shit at high isos it tends not to bother me. Similar deal with the k20d, it doesn't handle iso 3200 that well, but it keeps detail relatively well. From there i'd just scale down the image from 14.6mp down to 12/10mp or so.

But I mostly only print A4 sizing due to lots of paintings in the house so noise levels even at iso 3200 printed on A4 are fairly minimal.

But I guess, comes down t how well it retains the detail! Dunno if the above is frowned upon as a thing to do, but it always worked reasonably well for me, mind you I didn't often find myself shooting at 1600+ if I could help it.

I think this camera will be a big hit for all 40d, 50d users main reason being the massive leap in focus points, that is massive plus for its upgrade.

1.6 crop i'm not too sure about, would be better if it was a 1.3 and a tad strange how the xD line will be a 1.6? an 18MP 1.6 crop i'll be excited to see some sample images

Lets just hope it isn't too expensive

8fps certainly has me interested - I though the xDs were usually lower FPS. There's rumours of the 60D being a full-frame sensor - I'm currently waiting for the 60D (regardless of whether or not it's full-frame, it doesn't interest me as a feature) to replace my 450D rather than getting a 50D now.

Why were they outresolved by the 50D and not the 1Ds before it, with a far higher resolution?
