Default Star Trek Online

Had a quick search, couldn't find a thread on this so thought i'd start one.

http://www.startrekonline.com/

Synopsis of the game

Quote:
Become part of Star TrekŪ

In Star Trek Online, the Star Trek universe will appear for the first time on a truly massive scale. In this massively multiplayer online game from Cryptic Studios, players can pioneer their own destiny as Captain of a Federation starship. Or, they can become a Klingon Warlord and expand the Empire to the far reaches of the galaxy. Players will have the opportunity to visit iconic locations from the popular Star Trek fiction, reach out to unexplored star systems, and make contact with new alien species. With Episode Missions, every moment spent playing Star Trek Online will feel like a new Star Trek episode in which you are the star. Immerse yourself in the future of the Trek universe as it moves into the 25th century: a time of shifting alliances and new discoveries.

Adventure in the Final Frontier

Explore strange new worlds and seek out new life and new civilizations in a vast, expanding universe. Establish contact with new races, discover resources and uncover mysteries that will influence Star Trek's future. In 2409, Star Trek Online exists in a timeframe beyond even the latest movies, so everything you experience will be brand new, but still based on all the fiction you love.

You Are the Captain

Star Trek Online will be the first AAA MMO to feature space and ground combat at launch. Missions will take you and your friends into the depths of space, across exotic planets, and even inside starships! As the Captain of your very own ship, it's up to you to lead your crew on missions that span a number of locations. You call the shots, no matter where you are. When you're in space, you direct the action - be it in the middle of a high-tension battle, where you can maneuver in 3-D space and fire a vast array of weaponry at your enemies, or as you enter warp to explore parts of the galaxy never before documented. On the ground, you lead your away team across exciting terrain, interacting with allies and battling enemies. Every Captain commands five subordinates on the ground, all of which can be directed to act in any manner you choose. Can you lead them safely through dangerous locales?

Game looks pretty cool. I like the idea of being able to go away away party missions. Also being able to create your own race/ship is awesome.

However I have heard that there will be some purely cosmetic things you can buy seperatly (microtransactions) and I am totally not a fan of that and what's the bet to make your ship look like the Enterprise you will have to buy something seperatly.

Overall the game has promise though and closed beta applications are open now.....

According to a friend of mine who is way more of an old-school Trek fan than I (and who has worked on the dev teams of a few of the previous Trek games), the ship combat seems to be as navalised as the old Starfleet Command games, which is a good thing, but hopefully it won't be too complex for newcomers.

What impresses me about Cryptic's work is the attention to detail paid to the timeline leading up to STO's continuity. It starts (roughly) from Nemesis, past the events that created the alternate timeline of the 2009 Trek movie to the near future.

90% of the user base will look like Deanna Troi, and they'll be sucking off the Commander Riker NPC

Or vice versa.

That's how they've decided to approach space combat. The videos are up on youtube and it looks pretty good.

Guys it is in the very beginning stages of closed Beta I would be surprised if 5% of the total closed beta people would of got an invite yet, they run the servers up for a couple of hours 2 night a week at the moment to test for stability that is about all.

If you have been guaratened to be in closed beta due to being a life time member of cryptic than you will get it at some stage of the closed beta process.

I'm currently creaming over this right now :P

A whole bunch of Trois etc isn't the worst thing in the world. lol.

You'll only really see your own crew and that of your friends so it' no big deal how you choose to create them.

My only concern is that the release date is so close to uni returning :P
