I am thinking of getting a NAS primarily for a media server to a PS3. Since I want it to last a bit longer, I am planning on getting one that can take 2 hard disks. At the moment, I am thinking of either the DNS-323 or QNAP TS-209II. They both seem capable of meeting my requirements but was wondering whether it is worth while paying that much more for the QNAP ($299 vs $469).
As a side question, is a wireless g network sufficient to stream movies/mp3? |

The QNAP has some pretty slick software that does bitorrent, webserver with mysql support among others. Not really worth $160 if you ask me. If you don't need those things go for the 323, but I haven't used one. At $469 you are almost in 3-bay territory.
Wireless should be fine for streaming media.

wireless on the ps3 may not cut it for streaming hd though.
i get pretty much full signal (2.5MB/sec) and it still stutters, but with a wire its fine.

I'm looking to sell my DNS-323 (no harddrives) if you decide to get one (purchased March 2009. Just had it RMA'd and they have replaced it with a new one. Reason for RMA was corrupted firmware which was my fault as I was screwing around with it). They are a good device. Both my sister and brother have them. In the time I had it, it worked without a hicup but like I said I screwed around with some things I shouldn't have and broke it.
EDIT: just reread your post. I used my DNS-323 for serving media to my PS3. It wasn't too flash. It would not automatically refresh the media listing when new stuff was put on the NAS. It only allowed the PS3 to see 6 folders deep. You couldn't specify which folders were videos and which were music. All in all it does serve media to the PS3 but it isn't the most graceful at doing it. The bittorrent client is quite useless as well. Which leads to why I screwed my firmware. There is a way to access the underlying linux operating system and install things. I installed twonkymedia which greatly improved the media capabilities (infact it was damn near perfect) however one day the thing just wouldn't start up. For me, I'm selling the DNS-323 and buying a small form factor computer which I plan to run PS3 media server on. Also regarding the wireless question. Yes you can stream it but in my experience it isn't nice. The wireless cards in the PS3 is quite crap. If you are watching a movie it is fine but if you want to fast forward or remind you have problems. Plugging my PS3 into the nas with a cable fixed those issues. and

As for your woes, yeah, I did read about them but I am not sure whether it is worth paying more for a better NAS. If anything, I would probably spend more in improving my network as you are right to say the wireless capability of the PS3 is questionable. As a side note, was wondering whether it would be worthwhile investing in a better antenna to improve the connection? Also, how was your experience in using the RAID functionality (specifically RAID1) in the NAS box ... assuming you used it? |

I'm not sure what affect a wireless antenna would have. My PS3 was next to the wireless access point and yet I still noticed it being slow.
If you are able to get over the issues of the nas then it isn't a bad device.
