I would think the old laptop would outperform current netbooks.

i think op needs a new laptop, not a netbook. Or a more recent second hand laptop to save money. a netbook isn't really designed for gps mapping + hd stuff.

An Ion-based netbook might be fast enough (since those have a decent GPU that can help the GPU with video work) - but I don't think the standard Atom/i945GSE ones would.

Not trying to thread-jack here, but I'mnot sure what the heirachy is with portable computers these days?

Netbook
Nettop
Notebook
Laptop

That right?

Has there ever really been a hierachy? I've always treated notebooks and laptops as being much the same thing.

Nettops aren't portable; they're just desktops based on the Atom CPUs.

In terms of performance, it generally goes netbooks, then UMPCs, then laptops/notebooks, then desktop replacements.

i think the problem here is either your crap tv tuner which will be slow changing channels etc, or bad reception.

the mininum requirement for tv tuner is p4 1.5 and mine is 1.6. i link it to an external antenna so reception is as good as it gets. when watching tv, i go into control, alt ,delete , select compro tuner and the priorty setting is on high and have to change it to normal to watch in SD. if i select HD channel it frames. so i think laptop is crap!!!
cheers

I use my DigitalNow Tiny Twin usb on my Asus EeePC 1000h running 2 gb ram and HD channels stutter for the first 10 seconds then its fine. Have to make sure nothing else is running in the background though. Have tried this with XP and 7 and same for both. SD is flawless. Can't really tell much difference on 1024x600 resolution so I just settle for SD.
