Default Need a mobile cat groomer! Please help!

My cats shedding has become uncontrollable. I can't get the hair off by brushing him as I have been doing it so much and I can still pull clumps of hair off him! He needs to be lion shaved from neck to his whole tail. I am starting to cough so much from breathing this stuff and vacuuming my apartment is become a lost cause as it just gets covered in hair in as much as an hour.

I have been looking EVERYWHERE for a mobile cat groomer and cannot find one. Tried the phone books, internet, directories, asked 2 pet stores and I still can't find a mobile groomer. I need a mobile one as I don't have a car to transport him and I don't think it would be safe to strap him to a motorcycle. I also don't have a transport cage so paying for that, 2 cab rides and the fee to get him shaved is too much. I have no experience in shaving cats and I do not want to do this myself as I don't want to hurt him and I don't want him to hurt me.

If anyone knows someone that can do this, or if you can do this! Please let me know! I am in the Sydney city area.

Im sure there are a number of places in the CBD that would help with shaving a pussy(cat).... ;-)

Seriously, try a vet or the vet college. They shave animals for operations all the time and the college would probably do it for free for experience for the students?

Yeah I would try a vet or a college except for the fact that I have to go there. I know of a mobile vet, but do you think they would come just to shave a cat?

I know he won't be as cute shaved but his hair will grow back. I just need to get rid of his excess hair. It is affecting his health as well as he is coughing up hairballs non stop and I feel like I am about to as well with all his hair flying around.

oh for gods sake, you don't need to shave your cat. go to the pet shop and buy a grooming brush then brush the cat to remove all the loose fur and your done.

you can also buy certain types of dry cat food that claim to help the cat get rid of/ prevent furballs.

It'd help if people on this forum actually read posts rather than reading a few words and then replying.

This simply means you need to keep going! It will take a long time to get the amount down to a more toerable level. Personally I am with you - I shave my cats to keep the amount of hair low.

No. No they wouldn't.

I would just suggest one of two things.

1) save up and take your cat to the closest people that clip cats - they may be able to loan you a cage for transport.
2) buy a set of animal grooming clippers. This is a toughy. The cheap ones are shit. The good ones are expensive. But at least you can try this yourself at home. Don't use scissors unless you want red stripes on your cat.

So you agree it is a simple and effective treatment? Why the hate? Why are you so against cats getting clipped? He is trying to deal with "the responsibility".

I've got one of these: http://www.remington-products.com.au...ers/044835.htm
It'll cut through my tough beard so I imagine it'll cut fine cat hair OK.

They're around $30, I cannot see anyway you'd possibly injure the cat with it. Just go slowly so you don't get hair caught, that'll upset puss. You might not get an overly glamorous result but it'll grow back soon enough.

I've only had one long haired cat, agree it's a chore getting all that hair out and it just seems there's no end to it. From memory grooming several times a day worked best. I think the problem is as a you brush you loosen more hair so when you stop instantly there's more falling out and you think you're getting nowhere.

Sorry of this is obvious, have you tried asking one of the non mobile places if one of their groomers could make a house call.

You're arguing a point backed by experience and education with OCAU, Millhouse.

Step back and have a thought or two about this.

Probably half the reason Amfibious doesn't post too often anymore, and Break the Cycle cut down her posts too...

Thanks for the more educated posts, my faith in this site is somewhat restored.

I will try calling up a few grooming places and ask them if I can borrow a carrier, that would save over a hundred bucks.

And to the poster who said I should live with the responsibility of living with a longhair cat. My cat is a short hair, that's why he is so hard to brush. I have to brush him against the way his hair flows to get the hair off or else the brush goes right over the hair since it is so short. The reason why I want to shave him is because I think the brushing actually hurts him a bit and shaving him won't hurt at all.

Another reason I want to shave him is so he can get rid of all the loose and excess hair and then when it starts growing back I will wash him with anti shedding shampoo so I don't do it again.

I really have no idea why people are so against getting a cat shaved. It will grow back and it doesn't hurt him at all. It actually benefits him as he will stop coughing up hairballs.

ok 2 things...I know your not keen on brushing but for other ppl who may be reading...

There are different types of brushes, the normal metal brush with metalic "needles" which do an ok job (though one of my cats thinks it makes a much better chew toy!?) these are seen everywhere including supermarkets and also soft rubber fingered ones, these rubber based ones use more of the static attraction method and have bigger points (so more like a massage rather than needles) this works well I have found and I prefer it to the normal metal ones. These though will only be found at your pet shop as far as I have seen and not all do stock them.

Also you mentioned you will wash the cat with anti-shedding shampoo...have you tried washing the cat if it is short hair this might solve the problem for you. It may need to be done a couple of times and depending on your cat may be a lot easier than using clippers. as we are heading into summer you cats obviously shedding its winter coat...then come winter it will shed its summer coats...tbh they just seem to permantly shed and you will forever be dealing with this.
