Not sure if this is the right area... could go under software as well I suppose. I'm looking at buying a Samsung Galaxy, and I'm wondering if anyone else has a solution for mail/contacts sync with something other than Exchange?
I'm currently running a Zimbra mail server, with a Funambol gateway which I use to sync my current WM6 phone. I've had a look around, and it appears that while there is an Android Funambol client in development, it's not complete yet: https://android-client.forge.funambol.org/ - only contacts are supported. Failing that, does anyone know of an open source mail server, similarly featured to Zimbra, which is compatible with Android? I fear that Zimbra may be a bit of a dead end, since they were bought out by Yahoo who have then got into bed with Microsoft. I think my only option may be to start using Gmail and sync my mail server with gmail, and then use that to sync to my phone. Anyone else have any ideas.

Thanks. That'll cover mail, it looks like you can sync contacts with the Funambol client, but I also want to do Calendar as well - I can't see a way of doing that?

Hi,
There is also another interesting alternative to syncing with ActiveSync with Zimbra, especially for those using Zimbra Open Source Edition (and thus, not having the possibility of using ActiveSync since it is not available for this edition). Concerning mails, by now, you can still use the IMAP account which works quite fine even if not perfect. Concerning contacts, you can use our own native Android application (Android 2.x only anyway) which is called “LVContacts Sync for Zimbra” and which lets you sync your contacts, even if you have more than one address book and even if you have shared contacts. More informations there : http://lvcontacts.lezard-visuel.com The application is available on the Market. Finaly, concerning calendars, we’re alson working on that point but our new application won’t be available before September, anyway, there is a good application called “Calendar Sync” which let’s you sync with any iCal calendar and it works quite well with Zimbra except that you can sync only the default calendar, no other ones or shared ones. Hope this helps. Regards. |
