Default C: filling up!

hey guys,

so i've got this new rig, as i've been out of the PC game for quite some time i had no idea. The man suggested a SCC drive for my C:.

It's 80g, but it's already filled up! I've got my system files on there (whole adobe professional suite, office suite, vista 64 bit) on there, but surely it shouldn't be filled up on that?

Where does vista store it's leftover garbage that i don't need? I can't figure out why it's down to 176 damn mb!

Thanks for any help guys. Rich.

Probably has a bunch of system restore points eating 10-20gb of it.

Page file should be on a separate drive. Don't want to be wasting those read/write cycles now.

80 GB is really a bit tight if you don't have a more traditional drive to offload stuff onto (eg: photos, which don't really need the speed).

The 80 GB actually only comes out to 74.5 GB after you do the 1000->1024 conversion. The Windows folder on my Vista x64 install is eating a shade over 16 GB, yours is probably similar. Various other bits and pieces that come with Vista will set you back another couple of gig usually. Adding in the 5 GB of photos brings you to about 50 GB left.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by Adobe "Professional Suite", but CS4 is 16.3 GB according to Adobe. Office 2007 weighs in at 2 GB, so now you're down to 32 GB left.

That's it as far as the unavoidables. Then, you've got the pagefile as you noted at 4.6 GB. The other one to watch out for would be the hibernation file (C:\hiberfil.sys) - this is the same size as the amount of RAM in your system, so if you've gone for 8 GB ram that's another 8 GB gone. So now you're down to 20 GB.

That's still quite a chunk of space to have lost track of How big are:
C:\Users
C:\Program Files
C:\Program Files (x86)
C:\Windows

Also, try running the Vista disk cleanup tool (in Start->Accessories->System Tools). It might be able to tell you where some of the space has snuck off to.

Grab WinDirStat (thats its name, I think) for a quick visual indication of whats using your drive. Its a pretty quick way to find large useless files taking up space.

Hmmmm, I've always been skeptical of whether this is really of any benefit whatsoever. I've always let windows manage it.

I have one of the first 36GB Raptors, using it as my Page File drive [P:] and temporary backup drive [O:] at the moment.

It's slower than my 2 x 640GB drives (C: and D: on one, E: on the other), so I don't use it for my OS drive any more.

After putting my page file on it though I have noticed the system to be generally more responsive. Not enough to recommend buying a whole new page file drive but it is noticeable.

It is good to have your page file separate to your OS or games drive, preferably one that doesn't get a lot of use like a media drive.

It is also defiantly not recommended to have it on an SSD drive.

Because lack of trim support currently? Or to maximise the ssd lifespan by limiting the read/writes?

Probably more because of the lifespan? I know ssd lifespan is huge now but why not attempt to look after it?

True....for me I guess it's a non issue if I can get a year or two out of mine, which is probably how often I upgrade them.

In hindsight...

Quote:
Should the pagefile be placed on SSDs?

Yes. Most pagefile operations are small random reads or larger sequential writes, both of which are types of operations that SSDs handle well.

In looking at telemetry data from thousands of traces and focusing on pagefile reads and writes, we find that

* Pagefile.sys reads outnumber pagefile.sys writes by about 40 to 1,
* Pagefile.sys read sizes are typically quite small, with 67% less than or equal to 4 KB, and 88% less than 16 KB.
* Pagefile.sys writes are relatively large, with 62% greater than or equal to 128 KB and 45% being exactly 1 MB in size.

In fact, given typical pagefile reference patterns and the favorable performance characteristics SSDs have on those patterns, there are few files better than the pagefile to place on an SSD.

And given that if you have a 60GB SSD and it can take 100,000 writes, if you wrote to it at 50mb/sec nonstop 24/7, you would be able to do that for nearly 4 years. That is a damn lot!

You bought the thing, you should use its benefit.
