Default Password Protect Internet

I had some friends ask me a question tonight, they are hooking up their kids computer (win xp) to the internet as they are sick of the kids making a mess in their office where their main computer is.

Now what they'd like to be able to do is, have it so the kids can use the computer for all the stuff on the computer games, word processing etc, but if they want to go on the internet they need to type in a password (which the parents will only know)...

Is there some software or something that can do this? fairly easily and cheap/free would be good as they are not tech people at all...

Passwords mean nothing.. I can boot windows and reset passwords easy and this does not matter the version, osx go to the boot options set it so I can get access to shell.. reset everything from root to whatever password. Linux I can boot a livecd and reset passwords..

Now this does not qualify for encrypted drives but local machine access is a dangerous thing.

I dont have an option for password prompt

But in the browser, i use to set in a proxy setting, which was fake and wouldnt work, so any webpage they tried to get to wouldnt work
- should work with msn messenger as well, but not affect things like outlook express or online games

woodys_world69: yeah i know about that... but thats not really an option as the parents aren't tech savy enough to go through and change it back... and the kids will easily learn that one... They still want the kids to be able to access the internet, but only once they (the parents) have typed in a password.

slicerdicer: Yeah i know windows passwords are useless because even if they are able to restrict the internet access to one user account then once the parents have logged the kids on, the kids can change or remove the password if the parents aren't watching... Local machine access is not a problem... the kids have had admin access to it since the start on their computer... the issue is that the parents are now connecting that computer to the internet (never was actually connected) and they want to password protect the internet access part...

hate-xfiles: I don't know, i think they are just an average user too, not techie girls at all...

LeadAccelerator: that was completely useless reply, no need to be a troll... and who uses DogPile!!!

Does anyone know of any good free software that they can install on the computer that will block all internet access until the parents type in a password...

The kids are: oldest is yr8 (so 13), next one is about gr6 (so about 11) and the two youngest ones are about 4 and 2 so those two won't be using it... but the older two need to use it sometimes for school work but the parents also want to prevent them from accessing it open slather as often on the main computer the kids say they need to go on the internet to do assignments and the parents walk in and find them doing nothing at all to do with their assignments... so this is why they want the password...

search google on passwording exe's - i've done this before - you password the internet explorer executable. The tool that allows you to do it is part of a toolbox of programs, it's a trial version but you only need to use it once

one lame way i could think to do it would be to login to the modem/router and manually connect and disconnect the internet (obviously set to not auto re-connect). essentially using your isp username/password as your password protection.

makes me think of old dialup days when my folks withheld the account password from me. obviously couldnt connect to the dialup or use the net without the password (until i found the letter from the isp telling me what the password was hehe).

Don't know about them, but when I was yr8 I could bypass any lousy computer security system.

I'm pretty sure that year 8 kid can just uninstall your security program. So its practically pointless. But look up Blue Coat or something similar to that, K9 or something. I don't know the exact name, it *could* be what your looking for. But 40% chance its not. So i really don't know.

That makes things pretty easy - any 13yo will be tech savvy enough to bypass anything you can do locally, especially given direct access to the hardware, so you need to control the net before it gets to their box.

I'd control their net access by obtaining another machine and setting it up as a smoothwall box with an addon like "advanced proxy". With that you can define both access times and restrictions and make the proxy ask them for user/pass for net access.

Any higher end P3 machine (esp one on a decent motherboard chipset) with 256mb of ram will be a perfectly adequate smoothie for home use.

Safe Eyes installed on the computer will do it. It allows them to define whitelists/blacklists, time periods that they're allowed on the Internet, total time they're allowed on the Internet, logs web browsing history, IM conversations etc. They can set up one user for both the older kids, or set up two users and have different settings for each. No user logged in = no Internet access.
