Default canon service cost?

Just wondering anyone would be able to give me a rough idea on what it would cost to get a 1d3 and a few lenses serviced by canon?

How long is a piece of string? Servicing and repairs vary depending on condition and parts required. There is a $50 fee for them to look at it.

I'm going to hijack this thread a bit seeing how the OP sounds like he's satisfied with his answer.

I was wondering if anyone knew what would be the realities of buying a second hand professional camera, say, 1Dmk3. Not sure how many photos this hypothetical camera has had so I'll say, 100,000. If thats unreasonable, then bump it up to 200,000.

Does anyone know if it would need a service soon, and what would most likely break, and how much it would cost? And then how much would you think the camera would last. Even better would be some people who have some experience in fixing professional cameras.

Before this errupts into a "omg dere r so many other variables"... I know, but I would just like to see if anyone has had any experiences and thoughts about it.

Would just help me start to see if it is worth buying a higher-end second hand body instead of a new body.

My 70,000 shot 1D2N needed a new shutter 12 months ago - just one of those things. It should have gone longer, but it didn't. That's the risk you take with secondhand, but nothing to say it couldn't happen at 40,000 and out of warranty on a new body either. Buy the most looked after one you can afford and use the money saved on something else. Both my 1D2 bodies cost me less than a new grey market 1D3....

Edit: new shutter was $700 done by canon. They also cleaned the sensor and mirror and checked all the weather seals for me. It was ready for pickup the next day and I'm not CPS - probably just lucky

Only reason I ask is on the weekend my mirror locked up while working and gave me error 99... Problem was solved by removing the battery and it's the first time it's happened in the 18 months I've had it but I don't want it to happen again when I'm away this summer. When I first bought the body it had around ~10,000 shots and it's done around 39,000 now.

A camera need a service when it breaks or is close to or exceeds its shutter life. For a 1DmkIII you are looking at 300,000 clicks. There have been shutters breaking at 50,000 and those excedding 350,000 clicks.

There is no answer your hypothetical question.

actually that with Nafe's answer of $700 is the answer I was looking for!

So the reality is that the shutter is worth about 500,000 shots... and if I would go for the second hand market, I would be needing to budget an additional $700ish because it might break down.

Thanks guys

The reality is there is no answer as to how long a shutter *will* last, only how long it *should* last. 1D3 is rated to 300,000, but there's no guarantee you'll get that much. The only guys hitting that in warranty would be sports pros doing it fulltime. My 20D hit 114,00 before it died. The 1D2N only around 70,000. With any secondhand camera, there is a higher risk of needing something to be done on it sooner rather than later (as with anything second hand really).

I had a 5D make it to around 50K probably before the mirror fell off, but the shutter itself was fine.
1Ds III however had started dying around the 20K mark, well below it's guarenteed level.

As far as I am aware, there is no "guarantee" on how many shots you can get to on any camera, only a figure that the shutter is "rated to".
