hi, im wondering if anyone had come across this or a means around it.
pc connected thru dvi to hdmi adapter to lcd tv, it displays ok but a little shrunken with a letterbox black border, then if you hit zoom on the tv remote it hangs off and clips the screen. interestingly when you run pc thru vga port to lcd tv it does not have the letterbox but the picture isn't as crisp even if thru hdmi its a little shrunken and squished. 1920x1080 sony TV i have tried a playstation 3 & no letterbox thru hdmi which is weird, has anyone had a similar issue or fix?

odds are there'll be a setting on the tv that is like 'fit to' or 'stretch' etc... also may have to rename the hdmi channel to game.. those are the two things i had to do to get mine to work properly on my 46" 1080P samsung pc monitor... i'd call it a tv, but i've never actually run live tv through it so..

Yeah I have had similar issues trying to use an ATI Radeon 9600 with a DVI-HDMI convertor - black borders, etc, etc.
I solved the problem by going to an ATI Radeon 4550 with native HDMI output - no problems connecting to my plasma @ 1920 x 1080 p. What video card do you have?

Not sure about Sony TVs, in Samsung TVs the options are under
Picture --> Picture Options --> Size --> Screen Fit

I have the same thing on a Panasonic Plasma with a 780G motherboard that has built in HDMI...
Exactly like you said, PS3 doesn't do it, but PC does, and both are even going via a receiver... I haven't fiddled at all, (I'm just thinking now maybe enabling upscaling on the receiver could help also) but yeah it's a bit annoying, still the case even today that PC's and TV's just don't like each other!

Does your TV have an input labeled "HDMI/DVI"? My Samsung does and if you connect your HDMI cable to this input, it supports DVI, which the graphics card will automatically output through the HDMI cable and you can use the proper resolution without any over/underscan issues and it'll also support other resolutions that normal PC monitors support to (when you use HDMI, the graphics card scales to 1080i/p or 720p, no matter what resolution you're using), although I've got a Samsung, and you don't might be worth checking out as it could be as simple as changing the HDMI socket you use

There is also an issue with Nvidia drivers on Win7 where it doesn't scale well if your TV reports a stupid non-correct res. eg. 42" 16x10 plasma reports a native of 1280x1024 when it fact it should be 1280x768. Once you set the res correctly, you wil get a siamese veiw with bars top and bottom. To resolve, enter the Nvidia control panel and look for "Scaling" under the header "Adjust desktop size and position"
Set this to "Use NVIDIA scaling" and apply, wait for the pop-up box with countdown and accept the changes. Bars gone and correct aspect returned.

I had the same issue when hooking up my computer to my 46" sony. What I had to do was go into my nvidia panel and go to the hdtv resize options stretch it out. Its still keeps all the correct aspect and sharpness. I dont know why it doesnt go all the way to the edge but that was my work around for it

I had a similar issue. There is a option buried somewhere that talks about overscan.
turn it off for the channel you have the PC connected too. worked a treat on my panasonic 50" plasma |

On my Pana 50" the overscan setting reduces the effect (I already had that set just forgot lol) but it doesn't eradicate it... I'm about to move to Win 7, will see if that helps...

I just had a play around with settings now... A note for people using Catalyst Control Centre (if you have ATi graphics)... For some reason the default setting is to give the image underscan... Maybe for use with older TV's or something... But you can set this back to 0% (it's under the 'HDTV' section of settings). I then turned off overscan on the TV itself and now have a perfect full screen picture...
