Default RED DSMC specs detailed, prices start at $28,000 for EPIC-X, lower-end Scarlet still

info here/

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget....pic-dslr-1.jpg

Here we are at last. RED has finally dropped the full specs of at least one its "Digital Stills and Motion Cameras." And what did you expect? RED has naturally blown this thing out. The first camera to be released will be the insanely high-end EPIC-X, which will come out in four stages and retails for $28,000 (ouch). A pre-production "TATTOO" version will hit this year, followed by a production model for pre-existing RED owners next year, a release after that for RED trade-ins and then finally a widespread release. Meanwhile the Scarlet 2/3-inch camera (which is much more akin to current video-shooting DSLRs, though it doesn't have a full frame sensor) hasn't been given a price range or a release window, but promises to please with dual XLR inputs, electronic lens interoperability with RED, Canon and Nikon lenses (adapters required) and 1080p shooting at 60 fps. One great function shared between the cameras is the ability to operate the camera with a touchscreen and perform "touch focus tracking." So, now that we've frightened off all but the die-hards with a hint at pricing and some vaguely defined functionality, let's let the bullet points take it away after the break:

They've produced some sexy cameras. This, however, belongs under the hood of a car.

Really?
The one thing that red has going for it is its entry price, and in all honestly 28k for what it can do is a massive bargain. However, The Red one compared to other cine camera's is a massive steaming pile of dog turd, but come down the pecking order a little and its pretty good, however its taken nearly two years to get there from launch. Will be interesting to see the new "plutanictium" or what ever its called sensor in action. Scarlet will be a long time away as well, they couldn't release a product as badly programed/designed as the R1 on to the mass market of prosumers that that camera is designed for.

I'd be interested into seeing what becomes of the S35 and FF35 scarlets.

Am I the only one that thinks all of this RED stuff is a triumph of marketing over substance? Pretty much the same as Oakley's sunglasses, which are cheap rubbish with terrible lenses (and yes I've tried some of their high end sunglasses, they're all shit)

(for those that don't get the Oakley reference, Jim Jannard started both companies)

i think you might be the only one.

can you name a competitor to red one?

now name a competitor to Epic

and then a competitor to Scarlet

dont worry, i can wait

these arent silver-bullet cameras...they dont do everything well, but the price for what they can do...is why they are extremely popular

Sure, they dont have the latitude of film cameras...but a comparible camera would cost a LOT more. Im talking 6 figures and up - Dalsa, Genesis, Viper?

As for the design of the Tattoo...its a deliberate design. Thats how all their 'beta' cameras look when theyre first shown to the public but in this case this is the camera that will be given to selected RED owners for testing and their feedback will determine what the final Epic ends up as, and by extension - Scarlet.

Im quite happy to know that Mr Mike Seymour (dont expect anyone here to know that name) will be one of the people playing with this first release (Stage 1) since he was pretty much one of the go-to guys when RED first hit. It also means Ill get to play with some early 5k footage =D

Im a tad sad it turned out to just be an Epic announcement and that we have to wait ANOTHER month for Scarlet announcement (been a long time since NAB2008 when this was announced to 'release soon')

Lot of people on there are now looking for alternate cameras since this has gone from being '3k for 3k' to what will probably be '5k for 5k' which is great and all..but I wanted Scarlet as a 'cheap' pro level camera for prosumer pricing...but now its a different story. Accessories aint cheap either. $900 to get a 2.8" touch focus LCD? Easier to hook up my iPhone to it =P

The current Red One is 11 stops, and the new Mysterium Monstro which is supposed to go into the Epics and the Scarlet FF35 is allegedly 13 stops.
