Hey there, just updated my home computers with AVG 9.0 free edition from 8.5 and its giving me the shits.
For some stupid gay reason, this new version seems to be adding a folder called $AVG in every drive/partition on all my computers, and i cant right click and delete them, says it is open in another application and needs to be closed before deletion, and this never happened with version 8.5 It also doesnt have a disable, or exit option when right clicking the AVG icon in the taskbar which allows me to simply disable AVG while doing system backups to other drives using karens replicator, and version 8.5 did have this feature as well. Before i go send a vicious email to AVG Technologies (probably wont get a reply) can anyone here explain why these folders appear in all my drives. I also had to disable the Link Scanner feature because AVG wont allow the opening of links provided by places such as rapidshare.com (amongst many other legit websites) and again version 8.5 did not give me this problem, so if i cant find a fix for all this, looks like ill go back to 8.5 or find another better free option. i do have a 3 pc license key for KIS 2010 but that is even gayer than AVG because i need to enter the links of every website i try to open that it has been trained to block, and after calling Kaspersky yesterday, i have no other choice, i must enter every link it blocks access to. i should point out these are not illegal sites, i even get blocked to affiliate websites that are link in some microsoft websites. this is an example of what both KIS and AVG block access to, the 4 update links at the top of this website (the 4 downloadable ISO links for Win 7 upgrade) http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/10...ade/2#comments cheers edit: and yeah i know this is the free edition of AVG and i shouldnt bitch about it, but the paid for PRO version does the same thing as this one does

they are for the virus vault and they were there in 8.5. i'm pretty sure they've been there going back quite a while (back to version 7 or something?). i think before that they were just called vault$.
the right click to disable function has been missing for a while too. not much you can do about that. that link works fine for me. perhaps the problem lies elsewhere on your computer?

I agree, AVG turned into shit ever since AVG8 came out.
I moved to Avast and haven't looked back.

+1 I ditched AVG years ago because I was sick of the constant false flagging, have had no issues at all with Avast. GF still uses it and I can't stand it when i have to work on her system.

i hated AVG up till 8.5, but i assure you i had 8.5 on my pc until a week ago and there was always a right click drop down menu in the icon in the task bar that had at least 8 option, one of them was disable, and i proved this by reinstalling my 8.5 version and it was indeed there again.
i have always been able to disable AVG using that option when using CASPER to do my windows imaged to my backup hard drives. i much preferred AVG 8.5 over earlier versions, yet i loved Avast earlier versions and found the new one horrible, so there u go. on my main pc i have always used NOD32 or Anti-Vir, both being brilliant tols, especially Anti-Vir, and will be going back to them shortly when i buy another 3 pc license from them. |

as in i hate the user interface, and i personally think they screwed it up from their older versions.
Avast may well work ok as a security tool, but i prefer a tool that is easier to use and setup with the same performance. in my opinion, Avira AntiVir is by far the best antivirus software on the market, and i just decided that im going to renew my 3 pc license. |

Solution: get a real anti-virus program like ESET (nod32/smart security) or Norton (09/10). Avira also works.

i dont know what you mean by "Avira also works" as it beat NOD32 in the past 3 years and won the award for best antivirus software for those same 3 years, knocking NOD32 off its perch after winning it for the previous 9 years, so that makes it a pretty dam good product, but AntiVir is much easier to use and setup than NOD32 thats for sure. NOD32 is quite complex with its advanced setup if you dont know what your doing. i was using NOD32 for several years prior to using AntiVir, so i know it very well. the issue with lots of AV software now is they set their heuristics detection levels far too high and in most cases even i have to turn them down in the advanced setup, but NOD32 would be an exception to this, they sem to have a nice balance by default. you make it sound like NOD32 and nortons dont have any little pestering or annoying quirks that annoy users, and i can tell you all of them have faults of some kind, but telling me to use a "real antivirus program like NOD32 or NORTONS" doesnt do anything to help in this situation. anyway, i just got me a copy of Microsoft Security Essentials, and installed a copy on my daughters pc to test. my new thread on the topic is here. http://forums.overclockers.com.au/sh...d.php?t=827165 Click to view full size! i wont touch Nortons no matter how good anyone says it is, its still an over bloated piece of shit IMO, and Mcaffe is also rubbish as well. oh man have you installed it on someones pc and asked them to try setting it up the way it should be, and it def has the most complex advanced setting of all the AV software i have ever used.
to you and me it might seem normal, but remember most pc users are mums and dads and kids who dont have any concept of all this stuff, to them its a nightmare, but all AV software should be setup and configured using the best possible settings. i still dont agree with some of your other arguments but we all know this topic, out of all topics relating to computers, is the most complex, and will always draw the most arguments between users of all these pc security products. we leave it at that i think
