Default ATi Fan who turned Green

Hey guys.

So after many years on the red side, doing nothing but giving lip to my friends how my 4870x2 slammed anything Nvidia had, I have now gone and purchased a Nvidia card.

This is due to my beloved 4870x2 DYING! First it was shorting itself out, we cured that by re adjusting the back plate, then it artifacted.

While still under warranty, I can not lodge a claim with pccasegear because the cooler is classed as removed! Sucks.

Anyway, so I found a Nvidia GTX260+ local, it will do for now, see what happens next year with cards before making another huge purchase, but I have sort of lost my faith in these expensive cards, last 2 have done just over a year before failing.

Anyway, the GTX260+ is a beast, picked him up for the same price as a ATI 4890, he performs the same just about (Mines factory OC), but the big surprise is how well the drivers went and and worked.

On the fair side though, maybe the x2 ATI cards are just not that good, maybe the single cards perform a lot better as far as drivers etc goes.

I just hope a 260+ can tie me over until mid next year, at least.

Thanks for listening, you have all been fantastic!

My last card was a 260+ and it was a great card! I moved over to the dark side (5850) and dont know what everyone is complaining about? The driver installation and everything else was as easy as it was way back when i owned a 9600XT. Not to mention its the same process as installing NV drivers as ati, same shit different smell.

Why could'nt you just send it in? did you tell pc case gear you removed the cooler?
I would have put it back on and sent it in.

personally i have had issues with both ATI and Nvidia (just buy whatever is the best value at the time)

TNT2 - no problems
TI42000 - no problems
9800 pro - Ram died and i got an RA, no problems with the second card
7800gt - no problems
SLI 7900gt - SLI issue with due monitors (had to get a third PCI 9250) and these cards started to artifact after 3 months
8800gts - no problems
4870 - no problems
5870 - no problems

the 7900gt SLI put be off dual card setups and now that i have a PCIe raid cards a dual card setup is a no go

just remember that you will always have more problems with a dual card setup than a single card setup and that over time support for that card will wain and as such relative performance will reduce as drivers are optimized for the newer dual card setups

Just out of curiosity, what power supply are you running ?

A failed CPU, motherboard and videocard suggest that they may not be getting a clean power feed..

I've owned a mixture of Nvidia and ATI cards, and had problems and no issues with both. I think it varies with batches and series. I had 3 HD4870's, and one had issues, resolved by RMA. I also had a 9800pro die suddenly.

I now have an HD5850 and the latest catalyst drivers seem a lot simpler and smoother to install than most of the drivers I installed in the last year or so.

eastley,
Maybe you should be looking a little closer to home in regards to your failures?

While I am a unfortunate recipient of a DOA (technically working with issues) ATI 5870 I have never had long term issue with any of my hardware either from ATI or ASUS or Corsair or Samsung.

I have 4 computers all running ATI video cards, with 1 low end going into the new server and 2x 3870x2's and 1x3870.

My ATI 9800 Pro only got retired because it was AGP.

Not saying ATI is without faulty cards but ......

My 3870x2 game me nothing but issues. Mostly issues relating to getting both gpus to work at the same time.

Perhaps you should check out how well the early dual gpu nvidia cards fared.

Dual GPU was for quite some time a problem, I know people who refuse to get any dual GPU card now because of the trouble they had with both nvidia and ati.

Stay alive and interested in PC's long enough and you will change "teams" back and forth plenty of times. It's just a video card. Both companies are good. Sometimes one has a better card than the other. Sometimes one has a better bang for buck card than the other. Drivers are drivers. Some are great. Some are shit. Most are adequate.

wow I'm surprised really I am, I would get a better powersupply. Not saying to go and buy a 1000W but something better than a shaw 300W.

Is there even a shaw with 300W... Even a $19 Shaw is labelled 600W or so :-)
