What other files are in the directory? Give us a listing.

You might need to do a config to generate the correct makefile.

perhaps try ./configure first, otherwise try

chmod +x install-sh
./install-sh

should read the INSTALL file in the dir rather than the webpage instructions aswell.

I just want to point out, the package you downloaded has a file called "README". This file tells you how to install the package as well (./configure, make, make install).

There is a install-sh script in there.

But as GiBBo_07 says, read the INSTALL file.

Google has fixed most of my incompetence when it comes to Linux though I will admit I have tried many variants of the OS and am getting fed up with Linux in general. I know windows and while I don't mind a learning curve when I always seem to do things the hard way, and when problems arise that seem different for just about every machine (and therefore have me sifting through links for hours) it's annoying.

If you ever get stuck google:

how to install <package name> ubuntu

generally helps me, some articles are dated so I just change the file names etc accordingly........
