Yes, I remember my MBP having the best battery life. Then I dual booted with XP via Bootcamp and it would barely last an hour. I'd love to go the Mac route again, I just don't like the substitute programs for the simple things.

What programs are you missing on a Mac?

From your list:

Chrome is available
VLC is available as well as Front Row
Adobe packages are all available

What specifically would you be missing? on resources my MacBook uses 2.6gb of RAM sitting idle doing nothing... so it's not the best idea on that front, but in terms of Apps the only thing that's missing are the older games you want to run.

GOM, Filezilla, Camtasia, Audacity, Poser, all my video converters - just a lot of little programs like that. I know there are a lot of substitutes or similar ones but they're always different or cost something. Plus having a PC at home I really don't want to go Mac > PC again.

Have you tried turning Aero off, if you haven't already? You'll have the somewhat ugly blue UI but it could improve the responsivness of everything.

Why? The reason I considered using it was because a lot of Netbooks come bundled with it, why would my battery life drain any quicker?

I was referring to the substitute programs bit.

You could go back to XP and use this Xpize to regain some of the visual prettyness of Vista but your still going to be stuck with the "old way of doing things" unless you tack on more hacklets and shell replacements etc etc which will probably be slower than win7.

You might have to face it, a netbook ain't as fast as a laptop, just live with the "slowness" and be happy your running the best Microsoft has to offer.

This... you're going to gain a broader range of substitute programs on OS X then you are on Linux as well. Your going from one marganalised desktop OS in OS X to an even more marganalised OS in Linux, you can't expect miracles with the applications that will be available to you.

On the plus side something like Xubuntu would offer the smallest footprint.
