Default Importing a PS3 from USA

I've been thinking of getting a PS3 slim from America via a relative who is flying to Sydney for Christmas. It is only $299US compared to $450-$499 over here.

What are the pros/cons of using an import PS3?

For me the biggest pro other than the price is the region A Bluray playback. Importing blurays from America is a lot cheaper than buying them here in Australia.

I know about the games DLC issue but that is not a big worry for me as I will be buying most games locally.

Any other downsides to buying an import PS3?

Disadvantages:
  • Blu-ray and DVD playback regions, although you've indicated that you consider this to be an advantage.
  • If you want to use PS1 games on it, they'll have to be NTSC-U/C ones (because they are region coded).
  • Warranty. If it dies, Sony Australia won't fix it. It'll have to go back to the US for repairs.
