Ive flirted with linux on and off for years. I played with it back in the Mandrake 8.1 days and loved our time together, but ended up running back home to the security blanket.
As the years rolled by I always remembered the good times, and would try to find new and exciting distros to try and fuel my lust. It would work for a while, but that nagging eventually got to me and id go home with my tail between my legs. Recently ive been flirting with Arch and some dualboot action.. I fell in love. I finally made the commitment when my PC became a laptop, and i now fully run Ubuntu 64bit !! Im a changed man. With Cegeda to help with some solid counciling, i no longer have to turn back to the ex which is known a "xp". I will admit i still have XPs younger sisters number on speed dial for the occasional "meet up for coffee" situations when the need arises, im always content to know that Ive got ubuntu to come home to. So in summary, Im a new man, im converted, and committed, and im here to say its for good.. Ive been burnt WAY too many times. Im hoping this love never ends. Anyone else got some confession the wanna get off their chest ? Click to view full size!

try cairo-dock for some cool desktop fx
![]() i've been using ubuntu for a few months now and it's great, i like the ease of software installation and the sheer variety on linux. i also love that you can cuatomise absolutely everything. the way that it keeps track of your installed packages and updates them is also good, and the hardware support is much better. I got my printer, scanner, camera to work with no probs. I can even browse my touch pro2 on it. the only things i do miss about windows are gaming, microsoft office, IE8, and the speediness of RDP. Gnome-RDP is close, but still not close enough and VNC stinks. i also do miss having a system that always just works and not having to go hunting for an article on how to fix every tiny error or how to change 1 particular part. It can be a lot of work. It's definitely come a long way, but still has ways to go. If it's been a few years for you since you last tried a distro, then definitely try Karmic Koala. If the above things worked for me on linux then there would be nothing stopping me using it full-time. |

yer i was using openbox + pypanel + conky on my arch install.. it was sweet.. But i wanted something a bit more "mainstream" and less hassle.
Dont get me wrong, i LOVE arch and can very much see myself going back to it.. But its quite a bit of work to get it going and trouble shooting is a PIG. But its spastically light and fast, which is what i was looking for at the time. Ive seen cairo, but never really thought about using it.. I can see its advantages.. This mantop has more than enough grunt to run everything sexy like that.. so why not i say Theres a few things i wanna change.. But ill just get everything sorted bit at a time before i take on too much ! Cheers for the info tho.. interesting..

I can't believe you'd complain about a lack of IE8, at least for anyone but a web dev who needs it for testing. Quote:

Yeah I lovingly crafted an Arch install over about a week with slim, conky, pypanel, thunar and openbox3. Ridiculously fast, and ran and looked EXACTLY as I wanted it. I had it like that for a couple of months, then I pacman -Syu and it broke everything.
I spat the dummy, formated and chucked ubuntu 9.10 back on, because I know it works out of the box. Even moreso now. I've not had to do ANYTHING myself to get things working on my SLi laptop at all. All automatic, even the graphics card drivers. Plus I have wine running my steam games without fail (except for Borderlands) so I don't even need to dual boot. As much as I loved playing with Arch, and customising it to the shithouse, I really hate the rolling releases. Plus there are just times when you don't have the time to play with an OS, you just need it to work straightaway without having to be upto your elbows in its guts.

heh.. ive just installed steam and im copying over the .gcf files from my caddy (backed everything up like a good boy) and i should be good to go. I read that wine can only do so much.. So i might take the plunge and resubscribe to cedega for a month or 2 to get the base amount of games i want working.. Such as L4D etc...
Must try RA3, as my main gripe was cnc:zh which would NOT work multi.. but that was EAs fault for using non standard protocols and cedega crew wouldnt develop a new network code for one game.. *sigh* Anyway.. Any pointers on games ?

I would be more tempted to try crossover games instead: http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxgames/ They also have a nice model where people pay them to make apps work under linux, and they contribute the code back into wine.
