I would consider hard wiring them.
Wow, how did I not even think of that. It's funny how something so simple can be so easily overlooked then so obvious in hindsight. If my current two cables fail (the one on my super fi. 5 EB and the spare I have from my regular super fi. 5 after the socket broke) then I will definitely look into this. Infact, I may just do it anyway because I'm that sort of person. (And the red sleeving looks sex!)

Any idea where I might source suitable pins from?

edit: lol, it's the same size as an IDE 2.5" floppy connector, both pin size and pin spacing if you wanted to cutup the connector to have two pins moulded into something solid rather than the loose pins plugging in separately. Apparently the IDE pins aren't as tight a fit as the stock pins though, if anyone is interested this thread has a lot of good info.

The novelty of it just makes me want to blow 140+ aud on a cable

Modafroman, what sort of original UE cable where you using? was it the straight connector one or the right angled one?

I initially had the right angled one and it survived some harsh abuse, the other end gave way with the molding metal giving way and slicing the cable. The one i currently have i bought from headphonic (grrr no more replacement cables) and they are the straight out one.
I've had about 2 cables with the right angled connectors and then about 4 or 5 with the straight ones... can't say either style was better or not, to be honest.

I think the next set of cables I will get will have to have the pailiccs 3.5mm connector, thats a nice looking jack Like the crystal peak ones I linked

So its finally uni holidays and I finally had some time to mess around with the cables. Got one of the broken sets, tested them to make sure they were broken. Chopped the 3.5mm plug off, stripped the wires, used a multimeter to test which wire was which (for reference, using the standard black cables with the straight end, silver was ground, yellow was right and white was left), fed the pailiccs sleeve and heatshrink onto the cable, set it up on clips, soldered, tested, heatshrunk, sleeved and then heatshrunk again, tested and its all groovey Was a pretty painless procedure, especially given how small the pailiccs solder points were. The end result, a revived set of cables using ~$5 worth of materials and 10 minutes
