Default My wicked raid arrays, your thoughts?

Heya Guys

Will I managed to add a Dell/LSI Perc 5/i to my system, After a bit of messing around finall got it working

First off the Perc 5 would not scan for drives, would just sit there blinking, then I messed around in the mobo Bios and enabled some GFX PCIE features and boom next reboot it all worked,

I was even more surprised when after the perc 5 bios finished my Highpoint bios ran and completed,

Also added a heatsink with fan to the Perc 5 as these are from Dell servers that have forced airflow, these cards run very very hot.

I added 4x 1.5tb 7200rpm seagates to the perc 5, yes only 4 out of the 8 ports as I have no more room in the case, 21 hdds with water cooling and a gtx 295 in 1 case is not easy

Here is a pic ive done up with a few benches

Let me know what you think

Had someone from another forum request a pic so thought id post it on here

The sizes of the partitions mess with HD Tune and show a false reading

Total space in the system is about 31tb

Alos just before people starting thinking im crazy with raid 0, I have all my data backed up, important data backed up twice, If a drive dies it would be faster to get a new drive, create array again and copy the data off a mate,

rather than using raid 5 and waiting 1 week for rebuild. I have also had 1 array going for 1 year straight so far. These raid cards are good and the only way to lose data is by a failed hdd, not be knocking a sata cable etc, which I have done many times.

Cheers

In that case. Awesome. I have been on the lookout for a decent raid card, the highpoint 2xxx range is what I will probably go with.

Yea they are an amazing card for the price,

I had a 2320 for a while, nice little card, Although one thing to remember they arent very good for raid 5 or 6, The 2xxx series lack a cpu and memory onboard, but these are great cards for raid0

If you are after raid 5 or 6 id go for a Dell perc 5/i, they can be found on ebay for around $200-$300 with 256mb ecc mem and bat backup, these are a great little card

There is a large review/testing thread here on the perc5: http://www.overclock.net/raid-contro...card-tips.html

Very handy info

If its 1 every 3 years im happy with that, would prob rebuilt b4 then anyway,

and what do your mean by drop out, HDD die or just unplug

As atm in my arrays hdds drop off every now and then, windows just says array locked hdd lost from array, i shutdown and plug back in and all good again,

And also there is no good raid type for holding 10tb+ of data, even the most redundant arrays will still take days to rebuild and would have to replace the dead drive anyway, it would be faster to copy the data off my mate once ive replaced the drive and recreated the array

you do know you can still use raid 5/6 while it is rebuilding it is not like you are locked out until it has finished rebuilding...

Curious to know what block/cluster sizes you are using.

I've tried many different ones, but for the files I store, I found a 1024/64 to be overall best. (Storing HD/SD and ISOS)

Sure, it takes a long time to rebuild - but how long does it take to restore a couple of terabytes of data?

Not as long as you think. Considering we're all running multi port PCI-E network cards, we all get over 100MB/s easily both ways.

It is faster to re-transfer than rebuild.

(We being the people he would get his data back from)

yeah, its faster to restore from backup over teh network than it is from a single internal fixed disk
